Authenticity cuts two ways. At Cottons, it runs to the less appealing aspects of some restaurants in the Caribbean: shambolic service, schizophrenic decor that combines rum shack with yacht club, and soul food with misplaced airs of pretension. It's a shame, as the initial vibe is a nice one. A brightly coloured dining room dotted with boxing and travel posters looks on to a sweet little bar stuffed with an amazing rum selection and various cocktails on one side, and Exmouth Market on the other.

The menu is also appealing, with a broad selection of hearty traditional dishes, including papaya and mango salad, grilled jerk chicken caesar salad, curry goat and a mixed jerk meat or fish grill. The latter promised parrotfish, tilapia, snapper and tiger prawns, but turned out to be two unidentifiable steaks and a chewy fillet topped with one burnt king prawn. The meat version was little better; pork ribs and belly pork had been replaced by ham because, said our waitress unapologetically, the pork hadn't been delivered. Punchy jerk sauce and perfect plantain made some amends, but our disappointment remained - standards have slipped at this once very good restaurant.

Service is rubbish, food is even worse!

First time I have ever said "Terrible" when asked by the waitress what I thought about the food.

Unfortunately they didn't care!

The décor and lighting was not bad, I did feel very comfortable there however the RnB music was too loud and not appropriate for the venue (its not a takeaway restaurant). The service was very poor from the beginning, the waitress rushed us as soon as we had sat down and would not leave us alone for even 5 minutes even though we had ordered drinks and requested time to place our order. The main menus were replaced with 'set menu's' which was very disappointing as we would have enjoyed choosing from the regular menu. I have no idea why she changed the menu's.

The food was not great for the prices we paying. The main meals (goat fish and goat curry) were full of bones and the curry was more bones than meat. The rice and peas was excellent however. Do not bring a child into this restaurant as I do not think they are able to make child friendly dishes (i.e less spice) as they pre-prepare all of the dishes in spices.

The dessert was undercooked. The cake was supposed to be served with vanilla ice cream and when it arrived we were given chocolate ice cream, which did not go with a fruity cake. We were offered no apology for this and it was brought over to the table in a very shabby waitressing style, with a lot of huffing and puffing when we complained that it was not as we ordered. No amends were made and this was not their first mistake, also he chocolate fondant did not taste fresh at all and was served with regular custard. Not very appetising.

We were still expected to pay the 12.5% service charge, which for a bill of our size (8 people) was far too generous for the terrible service we recieved.

I will not be coming back here unless I am dragged kicking and screaming. There are far better restaurants. If their food begins to look like the food they present on their website and the service improves drastically, I may be happy eating here again.

Went for a 50th B.day party, had a set menu of chilli chicken on roasted pineapple with mixed peppers. Main course of Jerk mixed meats and rice and peas. Pudding consisted of banana and date cake. It was yummy but couldn't eat it all as it was massive portions!!! Had a pina colada too, am so going back, very, very soon!!! Thought prices were reasonable.

A disappointing standard of food for the price. The fritters had clearly been frozen, the main courses were full of bones, and the salad hadn't been washed properly. The waiters were charming, but were forgetful and clueless. A shame.
