A collaborative creative enterprise sited in a former railway yard a few minutes' train ride from London Bridge, the Deptford Project is a make-do world away from the Shard or tourist hotspot Borough.

While the 'up-cycling' artists and open-air cinema make good use of the arches and railway yard, a community café has been created in and around a recovered train carriage. Both the artfully designed interior and outdoor decked area are bright and inviting.

Filling, good-value family fare such as baked potatoes and local sausages in a bun is enhanced by inventive and neatly presented relishes and chutneys. There's a good range of health-conscious salads too, and juices as befits a child-friendly place, but the generous, moist wedges of own-made cakes alongside great coffee are the highlights.

I lived in New Cross for 5 years and regret having moved just for no longer being able to get decent coffee, scrumptious cake and comforting breakfast at stone's throw anymore. Deptford's best kept secret, it gets so busy on weekends but never fails... quirky and fun.
