With its shabby tiled floor and plain wooden tables, this corridor of a café may not look like much, but someone out back really knows how to cook. You'll find gutsy, Med-leaning dishes on the compact menu, as well as a daily changing specials board. Baked sardines with a salad of tomatoes and red onions spoke of summer sunshine, and the full-flavoured lamb, chorizo and chickpea stew is deservedly popular (team it with a basket of breads for a good-value meal big enough for two).
Alternatively, stroll up to the deli counter to pick out charcuterie, artisan cheeses, wholesome salads or the tart of the day - leek and goat's cheese, say. Just save room for something sweet; the chewy brownies or moist lemon and polenta cake are both worth sampling.
Almost everything at the Fat Deli is available to take away, from bakes in the chill counter for home cooking, to the gourmet store-cupboard goods lining the shelves - all of which encourage a steady stream of customers throughout the day. The relaxed, neighbourhood vibe is occasionally too laid-back, with the well-meaning staff sometimes slow and absent-minded. Head elsewhere if you're in a hurry.
