Situated on the leafy borders of Victoria Park, Fish House serves outstanding fish and chips. Customers queue for takeaways on the left, their anticipation reverberating off retro white-tiled walls. To the right, upmarket fish dishes are served in the quieter, sit-down restaurant: the likes of lobster bisque or Greenland halibut with samphire.
Only certified, eco-friendly, seasonal fish approved by the Marine Conservation Society's 'Good Fish Guide' are cooked here (see the blackboard above the kitchen door to discover in exactly which ocean your fish has been swimming), and even the chips are approved by the British Potato Council.
Our battered fish was close to perfection, with a crunchy, light batter coating steamed Atlantic cod. Breaded fish cakes were fragrant with tarragon, and the chips fresh and crisp. Being very picky, we'd say the mushy peas were bland, but overall we've rarely found a better local chippy. The most convincing sign of quality - beyond insulated takeaway bags, authentic gelato and Irish skate on the menu - was that we left without greasy fingers.

Tables outdoors ( 8, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( children's menu; crayons; high chairs ), Booking advisable ( Fri dinner; Sat, Sun ), Takeaway service70% of the times I've used this so called "up-market chip shop" the chips have been all but inedible, reheated stale disgusting,it was good when it 1st opened, now only visit if you are feeding someone you really don't like or you have an unfussy dog,as these are so bad you wouldn't feed them to your dog if you are fond of him/her,avoid this place it's very poor
Tasty dish, friendly staff and such a beautiful aspect.
Thanks !
The fish and chips are good, the plainly cooked dishes of the day are even better in the sit down restaurant. Marvellous
Disgraceful! How is it possible to get a simple take away so wrong? We visited before - not long after this place opened and it was fine. Not so now. Cold and soggy chips, huge amounts of cardboard batter with a tiny bit of fish inside and the grilled haddock was inedible - the worst piece of fish I have ever been served. Just bad.
The Staff are ridiculously slow especially when it comes to seating diners, however, the fish and chips is the largest I've had at any restaurant or pub. They taste great but as someone who has been known to choose meals based almost slowely on the hope that they were extremely large, I am shocked then anyone thinks the portions are getting smaller. Also they give you second helpings of mushy peas and tartare sauce if you ask. Their specials are wonderful- the highlight of my experiences being Skate wing with a butter and caper sauce which was wonderful in the extreme and even more amazingly entirely boneless. I thought the scallop dish was expensive for it's size and the pricing to size/quality ratio of the starters seems somewhat arbitrary. More importantly than any of this foods really great.
This place used to make really nice fish and chips, not anymore. Portions are getting smaller and smaller more batter less fish more oil. Only a few chips if you order with fish in a box. The staff is slow and unattentive. Shame
Agree with the last review. We ate in the restaurant part as a party on a Friday evening and the service was slow and inefficient. They had run out of a few dishes when we ordered. When eventually served, the chips were cold, the fish stew arrived half an hour after the rest, and we realised that our £8.50 scallop dish was actually a starter. All in all not very good value for money and won't be going back.
Have been going here for two years now and the place has gone downhill big time. Smaller portions, more expensive and quality not as good. Went in tonight (Friday) and they had run out of haddock at 7pm! Asked for a large cod instead and what they gave me was small, dry and overcooked. Not much bigger than the kids portion used to be. Have given up! Won't be going back
Hold on a minute! I love this place. Never written a review in my life but had to challenge these 2. The food is simple but excellent - very fresh fish and plenty of it served in unfancy but very effective dishes. And it's cheap. As for the Fish Shop - it's greasy!
Lovely food , shame about the wait, SORT IT OUT!!!!!!
And say no to Dicards, wheres the Mackrel Baps????????
The Victoria Park Village crowd might like this place, but the locals use The Fish Shop opposite The Victoria pub in Grove Road, better quality and cheaper, but no eat in.
Astonishingly slow and dimwitted service. Perhaps if they hired waiting staff rather than out of work east London 'photographers', 'actors' and 'stylists', it might be worth the wait for the tasty chips.
Avoid the calamares which is made with batter, that like the staff, is far too thick.
