From the moment you take the escalator up to its gilded entrance, Gilgamesh is in danger of putting style before substance. The carved wooden interior and extravagant lighting offer a glamorous escape from Camden Market below for fawning couples and those out to impress.
But the spell is quickly broken. Windows overlook rattling freight trains. Staff in headsets, and a toilet attendant, seem to belong in a West End nightclub. Service ranged from overly attentive to stand-offish and slow. The pan-Asian food is equally inconsistent, veering from beautifully crisp son-in-law eggs spiked with chilli and tamarind sauce, to a watery mouthful of pomelo banh trang roll.
We ordered one set menu, which was great value for its quantity, but not its quality; the tired-looking house salad and lamb with sweet potato mash were shown up by the tastier à la carte offerings. There's a good selection of Thai and Malaysian curries, dim sum and delicate sushi, as well as predictably modish dishes such as miso black cod and wagyu beef, but the food simply can't compete with the overdone surroundings.

I read some of the reviews and it seems like I was pretty lucky. Not only this place looks amazing, the food I ordered was absolutely superb. Prawn sushi starter was good, deep fried squid were perfectly cooked and very big portion for a starter. My beef curry main course could not be any better but my boyfriends lamb was the main star and was the best dish we have both had in ages. Choc dessert was good too. We only drank soft drinks and a beer but £60 for the whole dish is still a great value... Definitely recommend.
Superb. This place is unreal! As soon as I walked in I loved it! The food was superb. We had a selection of dishes so got to try a lot of stuff! I would certainly reccomend any of the duck dishes. Lovely!
Went here for dinner for a friend's birthday on the Sunday of a bank holiday weekend, expecting a meal to match the sumptuousness of the decor. The decor and background is fantastic, it is so exotic and just looks amazing.
As we were a group, we had to have the set menu, and I am a vegetarian so ordered the veggie option.
The food was absolutely TERRIBLE and that in itself would be paying it a massive compliment; starters consisted of boiled cabbage in a roll, a kebab that i could have made on my barbecue, and sushi-style rice roll.
Mains were sticky rice, some sort of flavourless mushrooms boiled in water, and yet more boiled cabbage in a bowl this time. We had to ask for chilli sauce to give the meal even some semblance of flavour!
The only saving grace was the dessert, some sort of chocolate orange mousse, and that is just because I have a sweet tooth.
All of this food for 25 pounds a head, PLUS drinks PLUS a 12.5% service charge. No value for money, and then we were conned and scammed by our waitress into overpaying when we had to pay the bill.
If you want good decor, come here, if you want a good dining experience, go somewhere else. I would never recommend this place to any vegetarians for a meal and will never be coming here again.
I have been in the bar before, and although overpriced, I would highly recommend it; however the restaurant staff and chefs should be ashamed of themselves. If you come to Camden, get some street food instead, its a lot better!
I highly recommend Gilgamesh. I found the staff to be really nice, the menu choice of food and drink was fantastic and the decor is really something special. Order the crispy squid!
I had a great time at Gilgamesh in Camden. The food was lovely, really good quality sushi and the staff were very helpful. I will be returning soon.
Very disappointed by this restaurant. We went on the 50% off set menu deal and found the portions very small and overpriced. Not worth a repeat visti
