Guanabana claims to be pan-South American and Caribbean, but in reality has an almost pan-global outlook. Everywhere you look, there's something to drag your thoughts elsewhere: here's a Vettriano print on the wall; there's a string of apparent Christmas decorations; a pretty back terrace is filled with Middle Eastern hookahs and Japanese fans. The effect is fun and quirky, if a little distracting. Unfortunately, the kitchen seems confused too. From the equally roaming menu, we chose cream cheese-stuffed jalapeños with a Thai-style sweet chilli sauce, and spicy papa criollas (roasted potatoes) served with a tomato sauce, patatas bravas-style. Both were fine, but the main courses didn't match up. Grilled red snapper with a vibrant salsa was artfully presented, but the fish was tough, and its advertised roast plantain accompaniment absent. A traditional-looking chickpea, green mango and coconut stew with tasty rice and peas was more successful, yet didn't over-excite. Still, staff are helpful and attentive, and the decent prices, outdoor area and BYO policy make this a good party venue. Perhaps if it could reign-in its wanderlust and retain culinary focus, Guanabana could fulfil its Latin promise.

Facilities
Tables outdoors ( 14, garden ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable ( Fri, Sat ), Separate room for parties ( seats 30 )I visited this restaurant as it was recommended by a friend, however, I must say I don't share his enthusiasm for the food or service. Probably the worst fajitas I've tasted in my life, quite bland tasting. I asked for something to be omitted from the dish due to allergy (onions) and at first the waitress almost tried to force me to have the dish with onions or not at all, which I wasn't happy with. I finally managed to have her ask the chef if it was 'possible' to which I received a positive answer, only to receive my dish with no vegetables at all. Just chicken and tortilla wraps! My request for mineral water was met with tap water... The list goes on. Very lackadaisical service and bland food, much better restaurants in the same area for the same cost...
Decided to try something new so decided to do a google search and found this place, went with 2 of my old uni friends. When we arrived the place was heaving and there wasnt even anywhere to stand, definately advise making a booking if going on the weekend. We were greeted by the weekend manager who asked if we could wait approx 10 mins for a table to be cleared for us, we waited in the shisha garden in the back which had a very loud and lively atmosphere. The manager there took care of us all evening and provided us with complimentary mocktails to make up for the delay in getting a table. The food arrived after 20 mins but was worth the wait, probably the most succulent jerk chicken Ive had! My friends were definately impressed with this secret gem in Camden. I have read some very negative reviews about the lack of service and attention which I can understand from how busy this place gets, however, would definately recommend and go again!
Don't bother! We were seated out the back in a cold garden with smokers from inside the restaurant popping out every 2 mins to infuse our food with tobacco. Yum. Can't say much for the food either, bland (weird since it's supposed to be caribbean) and not especially well-executed. Waiters are friendly but have a lackadaisical approach to service with pretty much all the table around us being given stuff free because they'd forgotten something. Yes, it's not very expensive but you can get much better food nearby, shame as they could be much better.
Came here for the first time yesterday, after my friends have been going on about it for about a year now! it seems like everyone and their dog has has had their birthday there.
Decided to ditch the groups and dragged my boyfriend across the other end of London to this restaurant and check out the hype for myself.
Not much from inside but as soon as you walk in its like your in someone's home. Very cosy indeed! Not sure if everyone would love the music, but i can see why my friends love it. They were playing songs I grew up with. Not surprising considering the owner is relatively young. You see him popping around every now and again. Seems pleasant.
The food is rather good, don't expect 5 star presentation but definitely full of flavour. The service warm and attentive. and the price quite reasonable. I would definitely agree with Time Out as the food being more pan-american, but they do have some surprises such as chicken chicharones (crispy chicken skin) and oxtail butter bean stew.
Was a bit disappointed that they don't serve alcohol, apparently its just BYO, but luckily there was a off-licence just next door. Come to think of it, it's a great way to save some money. saw the same wine a local restaurant we frequent on sale for a 1/4 of what we usually pay!
To be picky the decor does seem incoherent, but really, who cares. Would i go again? YES
As far as restaurants in London go they really hit the mark with this place. Atmosphere, food, service is all done very well here. The homely decor and the warm service makes you feel as you are in your favourite uncles house with his second wife's home cooking. The food is full of flavour and the home made limelemonade is to die for. Went with a mixed group of friends, some eating halal only and they were delighted to have been introduced to a halal restaurant that serves such an array of dishes. This place is perfectly placed in Camden.
They have a BYO policy here. which is great as an off licence is directly next door. A small handful of restaurants in London offer BYO cause it eats into their profits, but with the amount of people coming though the door i can see that sales isn't an issue for them. The difference between Guanabana and other BYO restaurants in London is the level service given when you bring your own booze. You are given ice buckets and champagne flutes if needed. its like you bought the wine there! The London BYO scene is lacking compared to countries like Australia. Hopefully for my pockets sake Guanabana will pioneer a waive of restaurants in Camden doing the same. If not, then no matter have no complaints in going back to Guanabana every other week. Definitely my kind of Joint.
