The Apprentice's main draw is its location, with a front terrace looking right on to Hoxton Square. It's a great place to hang out and have weekend brunch. Inside, the premises are attractive too, with dark walls, dark wood and a gastropub feel. The place is run by the Training for Life charity, teaching catering skills to the long-term unemployed.
A straightforward Modern European menu is supplemented at brunch by some egg dishes and a 'Hoxton fry-up'. Instead, we opted for a starter of fish cakes, with a good texture and flavour, accompanied by a generous bowl of herby, lemony crème fraîche.
A main of steak with peppercorn sauce and hand-cut chips was also large, cooked rare as requested, the few chips golden. Other choices - some only available in the evening - might include navarin of lamb with baby vegetables and spiced rice, and pan-fried sea bream with spinach, mussels, clams and nantaise sauce.
Our food was competently cooked, though service was slightly problematic. The place was almost empty, yet staff were desultory and often disappeared. We were also asked the same questions by two different waitresses. Perhaps things improve when the place is fuller.
Sorry, booking is not available at the moment.

Just had a pretty poor lunch, it's more pub grub these days, and was totally empty (apart from our table for 2) on a Friday lunchtime. Used to be a great place for a quiet business lunch, now I'm not so sure...
I love Hoxton Apprentice- The food is always spot on!!
