This simply designed contemporary canteen, sister to a long-established restaurant of the same name in Crouch End, would be an ideal destination in any area for those nights when you can't be bothered to cook - but in dreary North Finchley it stands out as a superior dining choice. Service is caring and friendly.
La lot leaves aside, our dishes lacked the speciality herbs that make Vietnamese cooking distinctive; maybe if we hadn't visited on a Monday we would have enjoyed more than coriander and mint. The cooking was certainly good. Aubergine fritters made a crisp yet succulent topping for finely grated goi salad punctuated with crispy shallots and peanuts. Chao tom, prawn paste on fat slabs of sugar cane (deliciously juicy to gnaw on once the meat has gone), were cooked to a burnished hue and served with rice vermicelli, salad and nuoc cham dipping sauce.
Admittedly, the menu features a few Chinese takeaway favourites, but there's also a dedicated list of regional Vietnamese dishes (tom cang rim nuoc dua, cha ca la vong), plus classics such as pho and summer rolls. For a satisfying alternative to the Vietnamese beers, try the Portuguese house red.
