An interior of sombre rococo-esque decor, curved ceilings and formal tableware certainly gives Knaypa a distinctive look. On our last visit, however, we spotted a more playful side to this Polish venue, shown by the art on its walls (a studenty mismatch of witticisms and sexy innuendos) and a few fun, if not always successful, additions to the menu.
We loved the zurek, a classic aromatic soup of greens and chopped egg, which arrived in a bread pot with a shaped lid. Less appetising, though, were the chunks of breaded camembert, bitter from over-frying, and a gigantic platter of traditional Polish goodies (large enough as a main course for three) that had the peculiar addition of grilled processed smoked cheese.
The menu is substantial, full of the usual repertoire: from hearty stews of meat and sauerkraut, to loaded dumplings and obligatory soups. Families and parties are warmly welcomed, drawn to the elaborate buffet menu, the whole roasted pig stuffed with buckwheat, and the locally made cakes.
Knaypa is situated in one of the heartlands of London's Polish community, and rightfully attracts those looking for comforting food, smiling service and good value.

The restaurant is divided into two restaurants, the upstairs 'Knaypa' is where we were. The decor and the small size of the place made it feel very intimate. The music ranged from popular older songs to traditional to modern which added to the atmosphere.
We were served by Lukasz who was very nice. We ordered the house wine which was a very nice Spanish red which certainly complemented our meal. Two of our party started off with Zurek (a traditional Polish soup presented in a cut out bread that had an egg and pieces of ham in it- THIS IS A MUST); another had steak tartare- thoroughly enjoyable; we also had the home-made smalec (lard with mushrooms) which was really very nice.
Our mains consisted of spinach pierogi; pork schnitzel (which was huge); a traditional beef dish; and chicken breast with vegetables- all big portions well worth the price.
Most of us couldn't hack dessert but for those that did it was a Polish apple pie, finely presented with nice tones of cinnamon.
Overall it is a very nice place to go to. It's a bit on the pricey side so I wouldn't go there every week but for a special occasions or to introduce your friends\colleagues to Polish cuisine The Knaypa is a MUST!!
Visiting the restaurant for my friends birthday last night. There were 15 of us. Food was nothing special, very overpriced for what it was. Service was slow and the waitress was extremely rude. Talking and insulting us in Polish!!! We tried to contact the manager by telephone who didnt speak English and then hung up.
We brought our own birthday cake and asked if we could have it at the end of the meal, they had the cheek to try and charge us £30 for this 'privelige'. Unbelievable. Obviously we refused.
On the whole a very dissapointing birthday meal. Would never return or recommend this restaurant to anyone!!!
