A long-time Soho favourite, Maison Bertaux doesn't beguile every visitor, but if you can see the charm in its hard-worn furniture, chaotic decor and unruly service, you'll be rewarded with an enlivening café experience. The pâtisserie was opened in 1871 by French Communards and continues to stick to what it knows best: viennoiseries and classic, cream-loaded confections baked here daily.
The mont blancs, éclairs and millefeuilles all glisten temptingly enough from the large window, but their execution varies. If you're not up to the risk, choose the reliably delicious frangipanes or go for a savoury snack. The selection is brief - the choice is essentially quiche (again, uniformly good) or the popular dijon slice (a pastry involving mustard and melted cheese) - but it comes with a good fresh salad.
There's usually space to sit downstairs and watch the world go by, or else you can head up to the shabby first floor where there's a madcap gallery starring the art world's more eccentric talents.

Best café in London: fantastic cakes and pastries and personality. In a world of blandness and fake smiles, I relish their indifference to whether I like them or not.
if you go for something different, it's fine but not the place for good food and service. pricey and totally not worth it.
Lovely food, great coffee. Shocking service. Its basic manners to say please and thank you and not have a conversation on the phone (seemingly unrelated to the business) while serving customers. I don't mind paying over the odds for decent food and drink but at least give the outward appearance you are grateful for the custom. Avoid.
A regular at Maison Bertaux but sadly, after today's event, I shall not be returning. Popped by today for Sunday afternoon tea for two and was turned away by the staff at Maison Bertaux expressing, "Sorry, but unless you're going to buy a cake with that, we can't serve you." UN-BE-LIEVE-ABLE! Disgusting, so took my business to Patisserie Valerie just a few yards away, where we were treated with the utmost respect and attention. Very welcoming and couldn't do enough for us. Would not recommend Maison Bertaux due to their snooty BS attitude. I do highly recommend Patisserie Valerie at the corner of Old Compton Street and Dean Street. Pat Val's cakes are much better too!
Lovely food. Very blunt man behind counter who ruined the atmosphere of an otherwise nice place.
Went there yesterday for first time. Cakes were awesome, really top notch which is rare to find in London... Seating well there was plenty of it plus peaceful outside seating. Tea lovely, didn't try the coffee. Thought it was a great way to end the day. Not sure why its rated so low? Maybe a tad on expensive side and a tad grotty but this is soho!
Huge disappointment. Firing the staff and replacing them with convicts would even improve it.
