Brasserie: French (traditional)

The self-proclaimed oldest French restaurant in the capital is part of central London's disappearing old guard. Perennially busy on weekday lunchtimes, Mon Plaisir draws in tourists and loyal regulars in equal numbers. The appeal is the sociable atmosphere, and sense of history and tradition.

While the food is of a high quality, and skilfully prepared, it can't be described as cutting-edge. Classic dishes make up the bulk of the menu, with clichés creeping in (although that's partly the aim). So, coq au vin takes its place beside confit of lamb and steak tartare - vegetarians may struggle here. Diners on a budget might flinch at the prices on the evening à la carte, but will be pleasantly surprised by the good-value lunch deals, which normally feature one fish dish (a very tasty whiting with hazelnut crust on the day we visited) and one meat choice (lamb shoulder casserole, perhaps).

The pre- and post-theatre menus are also a steal. Desserts - the likes of plum clafoutis - transport you to holidays in the French countryside.

I give the Mon Plaisir one star .I and my 3 guests were very very disappointed .
The duck (Canard) was 4 slices 38 cm long 3cm wide and paper thin and priced at 19.95 .The so called mashed potatoes were the helping was a handful and cold.
I do not recommend this French restaurant .I will not be going back. This was a pre-theater dinner on 25th February 2012.The bill came to £155.14 including a service
charge of 12.5% .The staff were ver y friendly .They needed to be ,serving such food

A real shame. A fantastic restaurant in the 80's which has now hit rock bottom. A vile coq au vin, a laughable duck, cold vegetables ,ghastly service, decent wine, nice puddings - but what would you expect for nearly £100 for two for lunch? Tourist trap a la Covent Garden. Avoid at all costs.

This was my birthday which was relayed to our waiter, but he just seemed to go out of his way to be rude because of it or maybe he just did not like us! Both myself & my fiancee were dissapointed with the whole experience.Suffice to say we will not be returning.

Mon Plaisir was one of my favourite restaruants, but we have been let down by bad meals and worse service. Service has always been poor - but the food excellent. Our last two meals have been very disappointing and at the prices you pay, you'd get far better value elsewhere. A real shame.

I had very high expectations of "London's Oldest French Restaurant", however it very much failed to deliver. The reception was not so warm (and it was a birthday booking), the waitress was very useless i.e, confused with the order, quite slow to come back and get our order for mains, and generally slack. Which made me furious when they make it compulsory to pay 12.5% service fee.
The highlight was the cheese board which was the maitre de presenting a selection of 20 cheeses, however, these were not labelled and her attitude was awful.
The mains we had were very mediocre and did not reflect the price. There are many more French restaurants out there that are much better, do not go to this one.
