Bouchon Breton is one of the new breed of chain restaurants inhabiting Old Spitalfields Market, as a new branch of long-established Battersea bistro Bouchon Bordelais. The wine list is clearly aimed at City money, and you need to choose carefully to find a bottle costing less than £25. But this list is as extensive as it is expensive, with nearly 700 bins on the list, most of them top-class.
Our wine waiter took his job very seriously, decanting even our relatively cheapo bottle of Minervois (£29), carefully tasting it himself before pouring a splash for the guest to try; it was an excellent drop of its type.
The menu is a deeply traditional brasserie menu, serving the kind of French dishes that are evocative of Edith Piaf (playing in the background) and waiters in black jackets and crisp shirts (ditto). It's so traditional that it's almost a parody, with a seafood selection, snacks and everything else all together on a two-sided carte of dishes that wouldn't look out of place in a French costume drama. Our dishes were adequate, but not a single dish from the ten we tried really impressed.
Fish soup wasn't especially Breton - despite the restaurant's name, there were few Breton influences on this menu - but was rich, full-flavoured and served with the right garnishes. Frogs' legs were the first real disappointment, deep-fried and blander than chicken. The choucroute dish, originally from Alsace, contained saveloy-style sausages among the more appealling cuts of meat; daube of beef was nicely braised, but the red wine stock was nothing extraordinary. But the prune clafoutis was most disappointing: it's a simple dish that costs pennies to make, but we paid £7.50 for a sweaty, chilled sliver.
Bouchon Breton does some things right, such as the attentive, enthusiastic service, and it really knows its wine. However, the prefab feel of the place is disguised with French clichés (pewter bar, black-and-white tiled floor, banquettes) that are merely a substitute for real atmosphere, while the dishes and especially the wines are prohibitively priced - unless you're one of the minority still able to dine out on expenses.

Meals served 11am-10pm Mon-Sat , 11am-4pm Sun
Meal for two with wine and service: around £95. Mon-Fri set lunch from £15 (two courses), Sun meal from £12 (two courses).
Le Bouchon Breton is a good spot to meet people, close to the Central line. Lunch was glasses of white wine, Bread, olives and a main course. The Sirloin steaks, Lamb Shank, sea bass and mash potato was much appreciated. A crisp sugar crust of creme brules, no idea what the collective noun might be, Tourte au Chocolat, finshed a very pleasant experience. Excellent service and pleasant staff in an interesting environment make this a place to return to again and again and .....
i don t understand all the comment bellow, they must have come on a wrong day. everything was excelent from the beginning to the end for a meal , cheaper then will be all thos terrible restaurant chains around city ! give it a try, it s worth it!!
a great evening , amazing food and great service!!
i went to eat at le bouchon breton. i must say. i don tunderstand the comments bellow, a lovely wines list. a large chooses classic french dishes, the food was amazing and a great, relax and attentive service.i ll go back......
Company Christmas lunch, the place half empty: drinks took about 25 to 30 min to arrive (we ordered only red and white wines - should be easy). Spirit mixture arrived with a wrong soft drink and took a while to replace (only one ordered for the whole table), and the bottle featured at the bar did not correspond to the drinks menu (Absolute does not come in odd bottles). Food pre ordered 2 weeks in advance (set menu of 3 options) took up to 40 min to arrive; flavours not exciting but no one complained of a stomach ache, so let's admit it is acceptable. £26 for a set menu of average quality; ordered French fries (right there, not 2 weeks before) and they never arrived. French restaurant which cannot get potatoes gratin right and serves salted butter? They are very good in taking quarter full bottles of expensive water away when pouring and the manager makes an eye contact when you say excuse me to ask something and walks away never to come back... Check your bill to make sure that the bottles you did not open are not charged for. Company cards, you will better off in many places, and looks like you are only the only kind of customer.
Doesn't even deserve 1 star. Staff rude, service painfully slow, food lukewarm - it would have been ok if piping hot but not worth the prices they are charging, and they certainly don't know how to make a rocquefort sauce. Items not ordered were added to bill, TopTable discount not added to bill. No apology for a consistently bad experience. Avoid this place. Apparently Michel Roux Jr is affiliated with this chain - I'd suggest he disassociates himself from this place asap...
This was not only my first visit to Le Bouchon Breton, Spitalfields - it was also the worst dining experience I've ever had.
We were faced with one disappointment after another and the whole evening was ridiculous.
Firstly, we had to ask three times before we were served water, eventually receiving it about 40 minutes after we'd sat down. Our wine finally arrived 45 minutes after we had ordered it. The main meal was also late coming, and before our starter too. The meal went back to kitchen and then 10 minutes later we were told our starter still hadn't been cooked so it was best we just ate our main. The staff did apologise at this point and offer us some complimentary wine... which we never saw. Some time later, our steak came back to the table but it was completely cold. Something we begrudgingly put up with because we were now very hungry and fed up, and also because it seemed far too difficult to get the attention of their neglectful staff. Feels good to pay a lot of money for cold meat and chips.
The final insult was being compensated by one free dessert. Six pounds profiteroles hardly sweetened the whole absurd experience of Le Bouchon Breton.
It was a shame this happened, this was a special treat for my friend and I, and we had been looking forward to the evening. What else is a shame is that we were initially excited by the restaurant and its menu - I remember thinking I would definitely come back, but that is now unlikely.
We were made to feel invisible, and even my later attempts to express my disappointment to this restaurant have been completely ignored.
This was one of the worst dining experiences I've ever had. I feel ripped off.
We arrived at 7:30pm on a Tuesday. Place was half full. We had the groupon offer for the Chateaubriand steak.
The waiter came to take our food order without even having taken our drink order. It took 20 minutes for the drinks to arrive. We ordered starters and the steak. The starters arrived 90 minutes later!!! I had the onion soup and it was ok, nothing special about it. The steak only arrived 9pm! And guess what? It was COLD, OVERCOOKED and TASTELESS. We sent it back. Manager came, apologized and brought a new one in less than 5 min. Now the steak was too rare and still tasteless, we didn't even bother at that point and we weren't hungry anymore.
We then ordered dessert, the tarte tatin, it was also just ok. Bill took over 20 min to come, restaurant was almost empty at that point. Our waiter said he could remove the service charge from the bill and said that nothing of it was passed to the waiters, it was all to the restaurant. We decided to remove it and gave him cash as he was the only one who was trying to make us feel better about the whose dinner fiasco. All other waiters just didn't care, the worst service in a restaurant, the worst meat I've ever tasted and so overpriced. I would never come back (not even with a 80% discount from groupon) so not worth it. Do not go.
Had a fab meal on Saturday using a Groupon voucher deal. Food was superb and service was second to none. The Chateaubriand was 'melt in the mouth' - can't wait to go back.
Absolutely shambolic restaurant. Lots of staff with none of them quite knowing what they are doing. Long waits and pretty ordinary food.
Sunday buffet lunch extremely disappointing. No hot food when we arrived, and cold when it did arrive. Beef was burnt, soup was tasteless, staff were surly and chaotic. People milling around everywhere. Avoid.
Had a very much below average food with below average service for far above average price Sunday lunch at Le Bouchon Breton. I don't even know why I agreed to pay for the meal .... They should have paid me for wasting my calorie budget on such a mediocre experience.
