Nautilus has been owned by the same Greek family for 50 years (witness the pinewood panelling), but despite this it's no stickler for tradition. Instead of standard batter, fish is only available grilled or fried, Jewish-style, in matzo meal. Nevertheless, this is a blessing given the gargantuan portions.

The thin, crispy matzo coating on our soft, creamy plaice rendered the dish so light that we were easily able to manage the accompanying large platter of piping-hot chips (fried in groundnut oil).

Service iwa comically helpful, with our matronly server going into lengthy explanations about the popularity of cod, greeting customers with exhortations to 'Sit anywhere. Anywhere!' and even providing hand gestures to demonstrate 'the way I chop the fish'.

There's a touch of the tacky too, with the Disotto dessert menu offering orange ice-cream in frozen half-orange shells, and design touches such as turquoise-blue glass panelling, plastic flowers and shiny dolphin statuettes. Customers include in-the-know fish hunters and many pensioner couples, whose warmly familiar greetings suggest that they make Nautilus a regular haunt.

Often when eating out in restaurants we remember the problems rather than the pleasures of a the surprise of a wonderful experience which we had at Nautilus Restaurant on New Years Eve. Our party of four ate Cole Slaw, Dill Pickels, Pickled Onions,Muchy Peas, Grilled Dover Sole with Lemon and Olive Oil, French Fries. ( Chips)
The flavour profiles on al the foods was right on, even on the second mountain of French Fries.
We look forward to visiting Nautilus on our next visit to London,we would like to wish them a very successful 2012.
Regards,
Hazel and Peter Graben.

Chewed on a piece of metal that came from the batter surrounding my cod. Not even an apology, just a denial...."I haven't seen that before" said the waitress!! even after speaking to the owner and cook, who just wanted to make a joke of it, still no hint of an apology. Poor service compounded this disastrous meal. Bad show.

I have been to Nautilus countless times and can't speak of it highly enough. I've never seen it empty and the fish is always cooked absolutely superbly. The restaurant itself is nothing special to look at, but it is unapologetically all about the fish at Nautilus. Do not be put off by what seem steep prices for "fish n' chips" as the portions are enormous (I would consider myself a big eater and have never managed anything more than a main meal). PS. The non-battered fish and chips of offer is suitable for anyone who has to avoid gluten/wheat.
