This small, unpretentious place near Baker Street has a family-run feel. Our amiable waitress also helped out in the kitchen, which has a window on the dining area. The paintwork and mosaic tabletops seem rather shabby, but otherwise the surroundings are simple and inoffensive, featuring brass lamps and colourful ceramic plates.
Mixed meze is a fine way to start a meal, the platter crammed with paprika-scented red peppers, aubergines in tomato and cumin sauce, and silky houmous. Mains cover couscous, tagines and grilled meats. Several of the tagines marry lamb with fruit - pear, apricot or prunes, the latter of which we chose. The sweet and salty combination in this soupy dish (which also contained hard-boiled eggs and potatoes) made the flavourful lamb immensely appetising, although the accompanying side of bulky bulgur wheat proved more than we could eat. The couscous in a mixed vegetable main course was far more appealing, the saffron-scented grain beautifully light and moreish, despite the overcooked veg. The extra stock we were given was a homely touch.
Our fellow diners on a Thursday night were limited to two families, though groups also dine here; staff accommodated a walk-in request for a party of 12.
