For most food-loving visitors to London, a trip to Fortnum's is a must-do. It's a pity then, that the ice-cream parlour, one of its more affordable dining options, doesn't make more of an effort. Open-plan to the store's first-floor china department and with windows looking out onto Piccadilly, it's light and airy, with walls sweetly done up to look like the side of a chocolate sundae. But it's downhill from there: service on our visit, though well-meaning, was abominably slow (taking 35 minutes to deliver three scoops of ice-cream) and the product itself not good enough to forgive the wait. With scant nuts or biscuits present and a waxy, rather than creamy, texture, our 'flight' of ice-creams (peanut, chocolate macademia nut biscuit, maple and walnut) failed to live up to expectations, while the accompanying jug of 'hot' Amedei chocolate sauce arrived tepid and congealed, taking another ten minutes to be returned lukewarm.
