Time Out says Rate it
The Exhibition Rooms opened in 2009, and in the same year won Time Out's Best Local Restaurant gong. There's nothing especially novel about the menu of beer-battered haddock, steak tartare, Maldon rock oysters, spring vegetable risotto, Loch Duart salmon, or strawberries with shortbread, but it's all top-notch produce superbly cooked and allowed to speak for itself.
Pan-fried Cornish mackerel was succulent and salty, with a pleasingly crisp skin; roast beef came rare and lean, served with an enormous puff of yorkshire; and sticky toffee pudding was as wicked as you could hope.
There's genuine enthusiasm for all things national and seasonal, and showcasing English aperitifs - cocktails mixing Chapel Down sparkling wine and fruit-based spirits - is a particularly nice touch.
Service was welcoming, and staff able to make informed recommendations. Alongside the main menu, the restaurant offers Sunday roasts, weekend brunches, and two-for-one cocktails plus half-price wines on a Wednesday.
Downstairs from the light, airy restaurant, there's a cosy bar that opens on to a decked courtyard with squishy leather sofas: the perfect place for a digestif.
