Full on a Monday night, the Rivington was giving off great vibes. The whitewashed dining room looks down on an equally stripped-down bar, where food is also served. Works from local artists provide decoration. The user-friendly menu includes breakfast (brunch at weekends) and all-day bar food - bangers and mash, skate knobs with chips. Most dishes succeed, without thrilling, as in a recent meal that began with potted shrimps on toast (one of several 'on toast' options) and a pretty watercress soup with a poached egg floating in it. Tender Speyside flat-iron steak with so-so chips, and glamorgan leek and caerphilly sausages with creamed leeks were capable mains. Chocolate mousse, and a super-indulgent honeycomb ice-cream with hot toffee sauce made a fine ending. The odd dish is outstanding, such as scallops with pumpkin purée and black pudding; it was a measly portion though - we were grateful the waitress had insisted we ordered side dishes (great heritage carrots, slightly soggy broccoli). If the kitchen raised its game a little, this could be a destination restaurant, rather than a convivial local. (Drivers beware: staff are so used to seeing cars removed, they keep the number of the pound to hand.)
Sorry, booking is not available at the moment.

Babies and children welcome ( crayons; high chairs ), Booking advisable, Vegetarian menuIt's really sad because we used to absolutely love this place for it's great service and food but we've had three recent terrible experiences. When they were out of two items on the menu (spinach and smoked salmon and we ordered smoked salmon and scrambled egges and eggs Florentine), note they were also out of smoked salmon the last time we came a few weeks ago. This time we asked the waiter to ask the kitchen if they could make us an omelet instead of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, the kitchen said they don't make omelets. I'm sorry but what kitchen can't make an omelet?! Also the once amazing fresh bread was frozen and very tough. I never write reviews on these sites, but we felt this time was outstandly bad and worth a review in the hopes that they will change! Please Rivington, go back to being one of our favs.
We really like this unpretentious bohemian style restaurant and have been eating here once a year on holiday trips last four years. Sadly it didnt deliver on our latest visit. The staff, though friendly and informal seems a bit whimsical in approach. Two ginmartinis ordered, two mojitos delivered - is just an example. Oysters were excellent, cornish crab average, but the strongly recommended steaks were a true and utter disaster: extremely tough and obviously wrongly butchered. The attempt they did to make it right produced two lumps of steak marginally more tender but covered in foul tasting oil as though they were deep fried (old trick?). No good tastes there at all. We were really surprised....
Two stars for staff who seemed sincerely sorry for this. Shape up!
