The three-strong Rivington chain, owned by Caprice Holdings, now extends as far as Dubai; this Shoreditch original was opened by chef Mark Hix in 2003 and his influence is still clear on the menu. It's resolutely British, with, it claims, an emphasis on 'local' sourcing (although Bannockburn rib beef is surely only local if you live in Stirlingshire; see also Shetland fish, Yorkshire game, and so on). But the dedication to home-grown ingredients, free-range meat and responsibly caught seafood is admirable, and the kitchen produces solidly rendered dishes.
They're mainly reassuringly familiar (fish and chips, bangers and mash, steak, chicken pie), although often feel a bit pricey; a few show cheffier touches (such as sea trout with broccoli and clams, or ham hock with piccalilli relish and dandelion). In style, it's formal enough to lure in the City spillover for business jollies, but not to the extent of alienating the many casual creatives who populate the area. Service on our last visit did everything it needed to. The whitewashed walls, black-clad staff, crisp tablecloths and long, buffed bar make for a pleasant backdrop for breakfast, lunch or dinner, as does the East End modern art scattered around (another Hix hallmark).

Facilities
Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 34 ), Takeaway service, Vegetarian menuIt's really sad because we used to absolutely love this place for it's great service and food but we've had three recent terrible experiences. When they were out of two items on the menu (spinach and smoked salmon and we ordered smoked salmon and scrambled egges and eggs Florentine), note they were also out of smoked salmon the last time we came a few weeks ago. This time we asked the waiter to ask the kitchen if they could make us an omelet instead of scrambled eggs with smoked salmon, the kitchen said they don't make omelets. I'm sorry but what kitchen can't make an omelet?! Also the once amazing fresh bread was frozen and very tough. I never write reviews on these sites, but we felt this time was outstandly bad and worth a review in the hopes that they will change! Please Rivington, go back to being one of our favs.
We really like this unpretentious bohemian style restaurant and have been eating here once a year on holiday trips last four years. Sadly it didnt deliver on our latest visit. The staff, though friendly and informal seems a bit whimsical in approach. Two ginmartinis ordered, two mojitos delivered - is just an example. Oysters were excellent, cornish crab average, but the strongly recommended steaks were a true and utter disaster: extremely tough and obviously wrongly butchered. The attempt they did to make it right produced two lumps of steak marginally more tender but covered in foul tasting oil as though they were deep fried (old trick?). No good tastes there at all. We were really surprised....
Two stars for staff who seemed sincerely sorry for this. Shape up!
