There's no shortage of passably good pizza spots in Covent Garden, but sheer novelty value sets Fire & Stone apart. Its outlandish menu keeps classic Italian toppings to a bare minimum, preferring to make a sometimes-crude stab at reflecting international flavours. So you get cumberland sausage, mushrooms and egg on the London pizza, and a rather frightening combination of yellow coconut curry, sweet potato and mozzarella on the koh samui.
The gimmick seems to go down well with large groups of young diners, as well as families looking to keep the little ones entertained. For the timid, there are also toppings that make a less jarring fit with the doughy, flatbread-like bases. The marrakech, for example, tastes akin to a lahmacun (Turkish-style pizza with minced lamb), and the bombay, with its tandoori chicken and mango chutney, is pleasing enough.
The huge restaurant - set over two floors and featuring long banquettes and a modish orange and brown colour scheme - can accommodate 250 diners.
