Pasta restaurant: Italian

The tumultuous southern end of Green Lanes makes a great location for an Italian deli, though the restaurant element to this operation works less well. A picture window and an outside eating area let diners see the delights of the Newington Green gyratory; inside, the long deli counter has pride of place, and the sparse and functional tables allow a widescreen view of blue lino. The menu of basic pasta and pizza choices is similarly uninspired, although every dish we tried did have a mitigating factor: bruschetta with dried basil but cheery cherry tomatoes; overcooked orecchiette with matching broccoli that nevertheless made judicious use of garlic and chilli; and florentine pizza that might have lacked pzazz, but had a nice crispy base. There's no feel of a particular region here, which allows the wine list to prowl across Italy; the selection is better than you might expect, with several choices of each colour by the glass. Staff were under-employed on our visit, and were shielded from diners' demands by the giant deli counter. Nevertheless, service was competent, if less than warm.

Im surprised this cafe has so many amazing reviews. because of this i have decided to be quite direct with my experiences.

Ive been in twice recently and had very poor quality food, lasanga is especially avoidable. The staff were plentiful but in no rush to serve me or be polite. The prices were cheecky to say the least. It was £8.50 for a tiny lasange without a shred of salad or chutney.

There are so many tasty places to eat on this stretch i for one wont be back.

came here on sunday and it was very busy with my type of trendy mid 30's. I had their eggs royal and monmouth coffee and I was in heaven.

Service was a tad slow but the food made up for it.

I will come back 100% and try their pizza next time.

I took my business partner to Trattoria this week for her birthday lunch. The place was busy when we arrived but there were plenty of staff around. Nevertheless the welcome was not good and the service to follow was slow. We ordered the soup of the day and a plate from the salad bar plus a glass of prosecco. The soup arrived lukewarm and tasted bland. the salad bar was forgettable. What really angered me was the 12.5% service charge that was added onto the bill at the end. this doesn't befit a local restaurant and I object. Despite the compensatory coffee at the end we won't be back in a hurry. Shame really as we work locally and would come here if it was worth it.

I went to trattoria yesterday and it was a usual busy saturday. I went for their Italian breakfast, yellow yoke free range eggs, grilled tomato, panchetta,Italian sausages, mushrooms and mmmm what a treat.

Its a juicy, tasty, healthy way to start any saturday.

PS: i booked my table which really helps if you want to get a table as they tend to be really busy, service can be on and off but seems to have improved a lot with the new front of house idea.

This guys know their pizza and trust me I've tried many places, their toppings are fresh, base is light and crispy.

I noticed on the pizza menu that they use the old traditional method of preparing their dough and that says something...

it is always very busy on weekends with familes and young trandy couples, I am half Italian and have seen so many Italians coming here.

I don't know what the time out reviewer is talking about. This is an excellent restaurant with great quality and affordable pizza and salads (I've never tried the pasta). Service is perfectly friendly and as attentive as we want.

By poor service and fruit flies! - Oct 8 2011

Never returning. Went with friends/kids a while back and had a disappointing time then, but we decided to give it another go this evening and it was ten times worse: it was very early evening and not terribly busy, yet the numerous staff didnt manage to clean or wipe tables: ours was covered in crumbs, we had dirty cutlery, fruit flies everywhere (?!), filthy floor - didnt dare try the toilets! The waitress who served our table was sweet and polite (possibly embarrassed?) but the manager was off-hand, bordering on rude. It took ages to get and sort out the bill too. Sides were disappointing, paltry chocolate ice cream scoops for the kids looked like they had been scraped out of the bottom of a pot that had been hanging around for a while - so even they werent so keen (first time ever). The pizza was fine but nothing amazing and nice they had some decent toys for the kids, but these small pluses don't make up for the rest. Just glad I'm not local and have plenty of other choices!

This place offers the best pizza in london, I am told that they prepare their dough 2 days before, this explains why the pizza's are thin, crunchy and light. The toppings are freshly sliced in the deli area and are full of the real flavours.

The service was very good this time and so that is why they get my 5 starrs.

I am going to go back for their movie nights

Haven't been here for a while.. visited this evening for a meal with my kids and had a great experience all round! Friendly and efficient service and pizzas were amazing. Good to see the pizzas are still one of the best in London, service has improved dramatically and the homemade ice-cream went down a treat!!

why does this place think, hard working professionals are to give them money for bad food and bad attitude? i know that is not an italian attitude per se, so i struggle to understand the point of this place or why they manage to keep their doors open.

I had breakfast here last week and came away throughly depressed. Bad service, too many waiters, rude manager, overpriced cold breakfast with tasteless eggs with bits of shell. An insult to Italians.

I had a great pleasure recently in having one of the best breakfasts of all time, grilled panchetta, ciabatta and Italian sausages ( I mean who wants hash browns, beans and bacon now days .. ) And I got a free coffee of my choice included in the bill.

Shame to see that others have not had the same positive experience, I would go back again and try the pizza this time.

Sorry, but judging by my last visit this place has gone down hill.

We were there on Sunday and it was very busy. Nevertheless we got a nice table inside. To cut a long story short. We received two OK pizzas and our third order was totally forgotten. There were so many staff in there that it actually impeded communication and all attempts to remind them were unsuccessful. I therefore had to sit there for the entire meal watching the rest of my party eat.

Eventually I did manage to get hold of a member of staff who actually seemed to care, and she wiped the bill clean so we did not pay anything. Interestingly she also hinted that the place was not the place it once was.

I must admit that you can see signs of this. Badly water damaged lino renders part of the interior very scruffy indeed and the men's toilet is not the standard you would expect - validated by the fact that the last signature on the displayed cleaning log was some days before.

I used to absolutely love this place due to the nice interior and the great quality food and coffee, so It pains me that such an asset to the neighbourhood could be showing such worrying signs.

Come on guys, sort that lino out, sort the staff out and keep being the best pIace to chill, eat and drink in Newington Green!

I went to this place yesterday for breakfast and can only say it was one of the worst dining experiences I have had. The staff were incompetent, we waited 20 minutes for menus. Decaf coffee and regular coffee were mixed up and the waiters didn't know which was which. When the 'food' eventually arrived my friend was served a vegetarian breakfast when asked for meat, the veggie sausages we had ordered hadn't been cooked, eggs were raw or overcooked with shell in them, we were served barely toasted English muffins when we should have had toasted Ciabatta. When we complained I was told I was "very mean", despite complaining in a non-confrontational manner. Staff walked away from us and refused to get us the manager, when she eventually arrived she claimed that they were very busy - despite their being only a handful of tables and seeminlgly double the amount of staff.
The manager helpfully told us that the confusion and time for food orders was mainly the customers fault for moving around and the waiters not knowing who their customers were. We hadn't moved tables and so this seemed a very odd response.
I have never written a review before, I was so appalled by this excuse for a cafe thatI felt it necessary to write. This experience will never be repeated.

Trattoria sapori have nailed it right on the head for me, there pizza's must be best I have tried in London, the new cake's in the window look great.

When I went I sat near the fantastic large window bay overlooking The Green, it was slightly cold, but then again most places are with the cold that is hitting us. The friendly waiter did offer to bring along a heater which really helped, I guess being such a large and long place the cold can get to you. Next time I will sit near the pizza oven.

I went here recently and I would not go again. I had a table seat next to the street side window and it was more than a little bit cold. The waiter spoke barely any English and was unable to understand my order made 3 times. To top it all I was charged service on my order of coffee and a cake and I had to fetch the cake for myself as well as fetch and pay my bill at the till. My friend had a substantial but bland mound of pasta.

I can honestly say that since Trattoria Sapori have opened their doors, I have seen the place grow and grow, their food seems to get better and better, Im even finding hard to get a table on Saturday or Sunday.

I went to their Monday night movies, I say the Italian Job, great idea having a pizza and a a glass of wine in the cosy surroundings and all for £10.

Keep up the good work.

PS: would love to knwo when you start delivering....

I have been to Trattoria on a Saturday day, and I can say that the food is fantastic, but it is very busy so it must be doing something right I will try during the week and see if I can a table as last Saturday there were booked all day.

It would make sense to book on Saturday and Sunday, to all you Italian food lovers, try this place out.

Heavily disappointed. Food looked really good but wouldn't know as the service was abysmal. It wasn't that busy but it took two of us 20 minutes to attract attention enough to place an order (which was for two coffees, a slice of cake and a slice of pizza, both pre-prepared on the counter and not exactly complicated). After another 25 minutes of waiting there was no sign of any action - I complained to a member of counter staff who was totally uninterested and simply blamed the waitress. In the end we simply left. I also saw another two couples leave having waited for a lengthy time without service.

A total waste of 45 minutes of our lives: we will not be returning and will be telling others to stay away unless they like going hungry and feeling aggravated.

I was very happy that a fantastic place that makes great Italian food and the best pizza's in London may I say, have also thought to allow some patrons to comfy thought of watching and supporting the world cup, I assume thats why they have the tv, as its the world cup and they are Italians, done very low key you can grab a pizza and watch the match.

And as for your comments regarding dull pasta options, they make all their own pasta fresh, and cooked to order, how many places offer that?

Report
By Errol - Jun 23 2010

Has many possibilities but dare I say weakened by the self-indulgence of staff and management. Everyone's very nice, they just don't get round to serving or following up particularly efficiently. I do think that the comment about the "Newington Green gyratory" is a bit cheeky -- there's a nice view of Newington Green. Unfortunately the management have now decided that diners would rather watch plasma screens. It's not a pub -- and certainly doesn't charge pub prices. The pizza is better than the overpriced and unimaginative pasta.

I'd love this place to succeed but it needs to make more of an effort to work out what it's about and to respond to what customers want.

I have been to this place a few times, and oh my do they know how to make pizza's, and the coffee here is one of the best around. They could do with some paintings or something to color the walls, apart from that these people know how to cook simple rustic pasta and pizza's.
