Despite the capacious dimensions of the CBC's green-walled dining room, most customers cram on to the pavement in warm weather to absorb the vibe that filters over from Carnaby Street. Staff were slow to respond to our arrival (they were busy with outside tables), but we soon got a friendly nod from chefs in the open-plan kitchen, who tried to catch their attention. Our meal kicked off with a pleasing bottle of French syrah rosé. Chicken wings daubed with heady barbecue sauce and garnished with celery followed: a succulent hit in a patchy evening. The amiable waitress was keen for us to specify how we wanted our burgers cooked, yet two requests for medium arrived well-done and medium-rare. A bowl of lacklustre fries topped with beef chilli and crème fraîche failed to make a harmonious whole. Onion rings were much better. Desserts are supposedly handmade, but by whom, we wonder? Both an Oreo cheesecake and a chocolate brownie were soulless and would have looked at home in Starbucks.
