The Sophie in question is Sophie Mogford, who cut her teeth at Smollensky's and the Conran Group before joining forces with Rupert Power and setting up Sophie's seven years ago. The duo's time with their previous employers is much in evidence at the original branch in Chelsea (still open): a polite, faintly provincial and entirely professional British take on a New York steakhouse. However, their Conran-inspired showiness is really to the fore at this enormous Covent Garden offshoot, which takes the original's mock-warehouse motifs (exposed pipes, brick walls, high ceilings) and amplifies them for a brasher central London crowd. Given the new location, the food is about as good as it needs to be. The fairly priced menu is careful not to ruffle any feathers. From the list of uncomplicated and over-familiar starters (so-so calamares, tired caesar salad, dull chicken liver pâté) to the string of tried-and-tested desserts (cheesecake, brownies, lemon meringue pie), surprises are conspicuous by their absence. So too is inspiration. The steaks are fine, as they should be, and the service is unfailingly impressive, but little else will linger long in the memory.

Facilities
Babies and children welcome ( children's menu; high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Bookings not accepted, Disabled ( toilet )I thought its cool the fact their kitchen is open till late... I've been once, the food is nice but I personally prefer to eat in Byron which is just opposite across the street. Sophie's are trying to be a bit sophisticated with the burgers which is a bit silly.
Tonight we took our guests from Canada there at exactly 22:44 but the receptionists said they close the kitchen at 22:45 on Sundays and wouldn't let us eat because according to her clock the time was 22:51. She wouldn't even call the manager after i asked and she seemed like she doesn't care. Then another guy from the stuff appeared to ask if everything ok but nothing, he didn't care as well - I guess they just wanted to clean up and go home, they were tired. Poor. I don't see myself going back there. There are so many other great places to eat around Covent Garden.
How Time Out can possibly rate Sophies the same as the Angus Steak House I have no idea. I have eaten here many times with friends and colleagues and have never come away disappointed - fantastic steaks, great service, reasonable prices, top class location and no need to book. What more could you ask for?
The best pre theatre option by far. No need to book but you can always get a table. Stick with the steak and you can't go wrong -- excellent atmos and gorgeous waitresses too if you're into that kind of thing.
