Aesthetically, Villiers Terrace is the fussiest gastropub in Crouch End, with its 'wooden log store' bar area, statement wallpaper and bold colour combinations. It's usually quiet in the daytime and packed in the evening, when quizzes, cocktail nights or DJs create a party atmosphere. Service seems to run from nonchalant to churlish, and you can feel almost forgotten in the walled garden - but the food is a sheer pleasure.

On our latest visit, citrus cured salmon with kohlrabi, horseradish crème fraîche and ginger made a wonderful start. Next, roast chicken breast with chorizo and pea paella was lifted into sublime territory with a sweet smoked paprika finish, while miso-marinated cod fillet with mashed potato and pak choi in a soy and sherry sauce was heavenly. OK, so the texture of the vanilla panna cotta was more like a mousse than a set cream, but the flavours again were superb.

If the management could just sort out the staff's attitude (we got short shrift when asking for bread with our starter, and half a pint of lager took over 20 minutes to arrive), this place would become a firm favourite.

Delicious food, however £18.50 for a steak, a veggie main, one cheeseboard and two drinks nearing £50 left a bit of a sour taste. 12.5% service is ridiculous and not needed at all. From always working with hospitality I would be utterly embarrassed by charging such an amount, especially seeing as though the food took 20mins and we were the only table in there!! However the food is fabulous, so I'll just have to save my next visit for a special occasion.

Food is good, service OK. My gripes with this place: a rather short and basic menu; the exhorbitant food prices (£12.50 for a cheeseburger?? £7 for a starter?? REALLY??) and the 12.5% service charge. After all, this is a pub, NOT a Michelin-starred restaurant.
Great cocktails tho - in comparison to the food, these are reasonably priced!

Have eaten here for lunch a few times. The food is often well put together, not incredibly inventive but very tasty. However the waiting staff never fail to be incredibly rude. We tend to visit in a group of mothers and babies but as the place is usually dead during the day you would assume that they might appreciate the custom.
Sadly we are often met with arrogant staff who somehow consider it an inconvenience to serve you and are frankly rude sometimes. One friends simple enquiry regarding the type of milk they use (she has a serious allergy) was met with "if you have any special requests you will have to go to Starbucks" another delightful member of staff likened a friend breastfeeding to him whipping his c**k out and puttting it on the bar- nice.

I've been going to Villiers for a long time and they've finally got it right with the chef. The music on Saturdays is perfect, an awesome mix of old and new classics.

As a local I have been coming to Villiers Terrace for a while even when it was formerly known as the Princess Alexandra. I am very happy to say that the pub has never looked better and the food just keeps getting better too. Really delicious these days.

Time Out's Editors may not have eaten at the Queens if they recommend you head there instead of The Villiers. Food at The Villiers is much better - even though the decor is more authentic at Queens.

Nice for Sunday lunch, gnocchi was delicious. Poor selection of beers though and very noisy as party for 1 year and his 10 friends was next to us (why would one have a 1 year old's party at a pub!?)
