A proper boozer-like gastropub at the end of Chapel Market, the Compass is a laid-back and low-key hangout, with diners sitting alongside drinkers in the relaxed, dark-painted bar.
Food is pretty typical of the genre - rump of lamb, risotto, confit duck - with the odd more adventurous dish thrown in, such as our starter of ox heart: a big success. Thin, tender curls of ox heart had a distinct, but not over-strong, flavour: a good foil for the tartness of the accompanying pickled beetroot and horseradish. Grilled sardines with herbs and chilli was a generous portion of fresh, plump, perfectly grilled herby fish, although the chilli was not much in evidence. A confit duck main was again a large helping, with mushy butter beans: robust, homely and full of flavour. We also sampled a fall-off-the-bone tender whole grilled plaice, served with salty strands of samphire and clams.
A Capito pinot grigio made a fine, fresh accompaniment, and a shared pudding of lemon tart ended the meal well. Staff are professional, the pace is leisurely, there are three real ales (plus a real cider) on tap, and our food was great. Just what a gastropub experience should be.

Tables outdoors ( 8, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 40 ), Disabled ( toilet )Terrible food, badly presented. Probably the worst meal I've ever had in London. We had to complain and leave.
Horrible at organizing their bookings. I booked through their website for 15 people. Got a confirmation through email and text. I called around noon on the day just to confirm. I only called because I am a bit OCD. She told me that they don't pay attention to website bookings and that they couldn't accommodate us despite confirmations. Completely unacceptable. This was booked through the pub's own website. I managed to find another place quickly but it was a real hassle to rearrange with everyone for that night! Amazingly, about an hour before the event, I got a call from them saying that they couldn't accommodate us for that night. If I hadn't called in the morning, that call would have been my first notice that there was a problem! Only weak apologies and no offer for a discounted meal or something to make up for a booking problem that they allow to go on. I can't comment on the food/service but the service with respect to booking is terrible. Very disappointed.
Went for my friends birthday on Saturday, must have been about 20 of us. Everyone raved about the food, the service was great and with meantime and mad dog on draft the afternoon soon turned to evening. Quite simply this place is great.
Do not be deceived by the pleasing appearance of this pub, the staff are surly and rude when they aren't too busy being downright hostile. There is a long wait for average food and we left feeling annoyed rather than relaxed as one hopes to when spending that much money.
The staff were particularly useless when we first went in. There were no reserved signs on the tables so we sat at one. The waitress came over and took our food order, served us with our drinks and then we were told we would have to move because the table was booked. There were no other tables free in the restaurant and so we said that that was hardly fair, considering that we had already ordered and purchased drinks. Not a hint of apology was forthcoming, instead they made sure that our food came late and the service was poor and then when we complained we were told that we had been an inconvenience!
The worst restaurant I have ever had the misfortune to dine in. The sooner it shuts down the better.
Lovely meal at Compass with wife & friend last night. No 'appealing bar snacks' on offer or the game mentioned in the write up but a strong selection of good gastro grub. The scallops on special were very good as was the bread & salt. For main I enjoyed a well cooked and tender ribeye and wife had the sardines which she assures me were perfect. Friend enjoyed the gnocchi. No room for desert. Service was very friendly and not at all rushe. All in all a lovely evening but i would have enjoyed the Brit -esq elements on the menu.
