Located up a sidestreet almost exactly halfway between East Dulwich and Peckham - but proudly labelling itself a Peckham local on its website - the Gowlett is a large, old-fashioned, open-plan corner pub, shabby and down-at-heel in a reassuringly unpretentious way. It's an unexpected place to find food of any quality, let alone pizzas as impressive as the beauties that emerge from the kitchen.

Huge discs of thin, crusty bases come saturated in toppings to form pizzas that would grace just about any specialist establishment. Our siciliana was a salty feast of anchovies and capers, while an american hot was spicy and filling. The menu isn't extensive and warns that pizzas can take a while to appear at busy times, but locals seem happy to wait, content in the knowledge that they're on to a good thing.

Cool pub with.... local art, good beer, wicked staff, a truely mixed crowd of people (which is always great to see) plus of course....AWESOME pizzas! Hands down the best in the area for sure.
