Shoreditch is the new Soho. There's never been clearer evidence of this than the stead acquisition of chunks of Shoreditch by the Soho House Group, first with the construction of Shoreditch House private members' club, then the more recent takeover of the Hoxton Grill inside the Hoxton Hotel.
Their latest place is Pizza East, in the big warehouse space that used to be the T Bar. The grimy entrance stairwell remains the same, complete with bouncer on the door. Inside it still looks much as it did before, namely like one floor of an old factory, but now there's a bevy of smiling greeters to check your booking.
Despite the prosaic name, there's a lot more than pizza on the menu. Shoreditch House, which is in the same building, also has an Italianate menu, and there's some crossover of ingredients, such as the cured meats and cheeses. This menu's designed for easy assembly though, with 170 seats to fill and booking times strictly regimented (arrive 15 minutes late at your peril).
There's a recognisable Italian-American slant to many of the dishes, which is hardly surprising when you remember that Soho House has a branch in New York, and quite a few of the staff - including our charming, personable waitress are American. Clam pizza is a speciality of New England, and we were pleased to find that ours was not smeared in tomato sauce - in Italian cooking, mixing seafood and tomato is a no-no. Instead, our pizza was 'white', garnished with cherry tomatoes, garlic and pecorino. The base was thin, but puffed up around the edges from the heat of the gas-fired ovens (they also burn a few logs to add an appealing aroma).
Another New York influence is the range of small eats, which in New York are called cicchetti after the Venetian term for them; on this menu they're simply called antipasti, though here they're pretty large. Soft polenta topped with spiced and deep-fried chicken livers (yes, really) was a suitably autumnal dish, while chunks of fried calamari with a caper aioli was also substantial and comforting.
The desire to be on-trend has brought a few retrograde steps. One is the use of tumblers as wine glasses, which might look utility-chic, but they waste money spent on good wine as you can't savour the aroma. (Some wines are even dispensed via bar taps.) Another minus point is low light and tiny type on buff-coloured menus: the young chap next to us had to resort to using his mobile phone to illuminate the menu to make it legible.
Being Shoreditch and vast, this place is noisy. But the food's good and the welcome friendly, so get on down - there are DJs on Thur-Sat evenings, so it's a good place to get your evening off to a good start.

Facilities
Babies and children welcome ( high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 18 ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway service, Vegan dishesRidiculously expensive for mediocre food. We were seated in the middle of the room and the seats were very uncomfortable. Other than that, it was very noisy, little choice in food, no gluten free and very bland salads. When the bill came finally we were horrified, yet were unable to get a discount from anyone, despite the fact that one of our party had not been eating, three were not drinking and one was gluten intolerant. The only thing I could possibly compliment was our particular waiter, who was attentive and friendly. Very disappointing end to our night.
Great lunch place! It's usually near empty at lunch time. Perfect to savour a delicious pizza and get some attention from the staff (as opposed to the crowed every-man-for-themselves evenings).
The premises are pretty cool, with the usual grittiness of shoreditch and an industrial feel to it. the sevice was ok, and the food was good enough but overpriced in my opinion. I would recommend it to give it a go but not sure I would go back, you can find better value for money somewhere else.
Went there last weekend for a friends birthday, seating was alright, and we had a few appetizers and 3 pizzas with wine, nothing more then your average fancy dinner. When we got the bill they overcharged us by £600 which im sorry is just not acceptable for a restaurant. They claimed there was a problem with there system and we were forced to pay it. Needless to say £120 per person for 2 slices of bread and cheese with a glass of wine just doesnt do it for me. The atmosphere however is probably the best thing about it.
Just make sure you've got a crystal ball and can get your table numbers exact. Booked online several weeks in advance for my birthday and when my party number went up by one, was told they couldn't accommodate this. Was told that they were already fitting 8 on a table that could fit 6 comfortably which wasn't terribly reassuring. Had to move my birthday dinner at short notice so big thumbs down from the birthday girl and her guests!
I only had the option for 1 star, but actually I would give it 0.5!
We went last night for a friend’s birthday. He had tried to book a table for 18 over the phone, but the lady he spoke to, who was apparently very rude and unhelpful, said that the chef ‘could not cope with a table of 18’! How unprofessional is that?!
We were told we could sit at 2 tables, although I’m not sure what difference it actually makes if we are all together or not.
We had a table booked for 8pm but we weren’t seated until after 9pm, at 2 tables at opposite ends of the restaurant, even though there were empty tables together (apparently they were booked, it seems by them running an hour late, it meant we lost our seating!).
During our meal the waiter didn’t come over once to see if we wanted more drinks or anything, and in fact when we wanted anything we had to go off and find it!
We asked repeatedly for condiments that didn’t actually arrive until we had pretty much finished. Coffee after dinner took 25 minutes to arrive, and only after we had asked for it twice.
The food was substandard- my pizza was about 70% crust, and had 4 measley dribbles of cheese on it- they must be making a fortune by selling warm bread at £12 a pop!
It also tasted so strongly of garlic that I couldn’t taste anything else. I love garlic, but that doesn’t mean I want to taste it for several days afterwards.
We complained so much that they didn’t charge us for our drinks, but I’ve worked in enough restaurants to know that if people are that unsatisfied, they shouldn’t charge us anything at all.
They even had the audacity to charge us service charge, then come back to our table to tell us there was 25p missing off our bill!
I think it’s safe to say that none of us will be going back, and I will also be telling everyone I know not to go. You get better food and service at Pizza Express!
This place is truly awful, I have never been to such a bad restaurant.
Went to Pizza East last night on a recommendation from a Friend. Worst Pizza i have ever had. I had the Meat ball pizza. Meat balls were soggy and under cooked. Pizza base was soggy. Great atmosphere. But would have had a better pizza at a high street chain. The only saving grace was the desert which was nice. Doubly disappointed when the bill came. Way over priced. I recommend Pizza Express. Unfortunately i cannot give it 0 stars.
First off - **Genuinely the best pizza i have ever had**, I had the San Danielle.
HOWEVER...
...There were lots of stupid things that spoiled Pizza East, for example - I ordered a glass of wine which came in a tumbler and when I asked the waiter if he had a wine glass he said that the tumbler was a wine glass. I then addressed the fact that it was a tumbler and his words were "that's how they serve wine in Italy".
Now... I've been to Italy and I can't say I was ever served wine in a tumbler but I didn't dig in to this I just left it be.
We waited half an hour for our table, fine but!.. When our table was ready we found out that we'd actually be dining at the bar because there were not any tables available... It would've been nice to be told this before waiting! Also, the bar area we waited at before being seated 'at another bar' was not acceptable - no clear way of ordering a beverage of any sort, it almost looks like you are supposed to serve yourself!
Ridiculously sick pizza I had in there though!.. It's OK for me to say sick because I'm 22 and from Essex (I got the Central Line to Lpool St and walked)
I would defo rate Pizza East a 5 if this was based on food alone, also had olives and almonds to start - much better than the ones in Selfridges!
Mr Bloggs
Potentially the worst pizza I ever had. Love the decor, venue, quirkiness of the place but OMG the pizzas were rubbish- the base was good and well cooked, sadly all of the toppings were dripping with oil, even the vegs added on the pizza had been "fried"- the result product was swimming in oil. Same with the side salad, that included some bread (why!) that has been plunged in olive oil. Very expensive for a meal I barely touched
Amazlingly good brunch and Sunday lunch! Although it's hard not to tear yourself away from the pizza menu their roasts are brill
Dont bother - the worst restaurant in the world! the excuse they had for a pasta dish wasnt worth serving to the pigs let a lone paying (£15) customer. VILE! this is the second time i was painfully disappointed in Pizza East, so shame on me. Overpriced and overhyped - NO SUBSTANCE!!!
Nice place to look at but the pizza was very disappointing and salad a joke.3 lettuce leaves and a bit of spinach for £4. Service wasn't good either. Sorry, I am local but I wont be going back again.
Not worth the hype at all. The waiters are slow, surly and unhelpful. The food was fine but I've had better and at a cheaper price. They thought they were way too cool but it's rather run of mill apart from the amazing building its set in. I won't bother going back even though its local.
Absolutely amazing food!!! I will be definietely going back there shortly!
I won't be going to Pizza East. Just tried to book a table for 6 for a birthday party on a Tuesday night and was told they'd need the table back within two hours. Not even a plea for the 'manager's approval' could get us an extension. Table turning, tut tut, will be recommending people NOT to go there in future.
Very average, over priced...only good thing was the calamari...
quant e' ver a maronn ... o cess ra pizz...cess chiavat nfaccia!
has for started chicken liver with polenta, then salami pizza and cake for dessert. Not sure what caused it (other people eating pizzas / cake in the group had no issue) however today feeling very ill. Have not been able to eat anything subsequently all day... Shame, had a very enjoyable evening.
Really bad pizza, really tight on the topping and all dough. Very over priced. It's a lovely restaurant space but compared to the real deal, it's a total rip off and very bad pizza.
Have to say I has heard great things but was disappointed. The staff weren't rude, but I can see how some people might find them a bit imperious. Our waitress was actually quite friendly and chatty. Crucially, the food just wasn't that great, especially for the price. Very very salty. I'd give it another go, as it's a nice location and got a good buzzy atmosphere, but I won't be rushing back.
Wow what a surprise I've been there so much and have had nothing but the most amazing time every time. The staff are so attentative and nice and the food is delicious. From the minute you walk in and those smiley receptionists greet you to when you slowly wander out full of delicious food. I'll be back and back!
I had a really unpleasant experience at Pizza East.
One waiter there rudely explained to me that it was nobody's fault that there was only black mud inside the clam in my fish stew, after I asked him about the chef's opinion on my discovery. (There was no apology whatsoever, which really got on my nerves.)
And as my friend was on the way back from the ladies' room, she encounter that the very waiter was behind our back moaning about my complaint, calling me "unreasonable".
The manager was not of much help either. Nothing was done to resolve the problem. We were simply left extremely unsatisfied.
I would not recommend it to anyone unless you expect everything could be dealt WITHOUT any assistance from the people who work there. Because it is surely rude and unprofessional.
