Tomoe is certainly one of the shabbier residents of Marylebone Lane. Its black and white interior and menus that look home-printed could do with an overhaul. Despite this, savvy Londoners keep returning for the well-presented, high-quality food.
Grilled razor clams and own-made tofu are among the more unusual options. Unfortunately, the fresh tofu wasn't available on our visit, so we plumped for agedashi tofu (deep-fried tofu in fish stock with dried bonito flakes); surprisingly, it came with chunks of avocado and green pepper tempura as well as the expected tofu.
The attractive chirashi sushi (available in two sizes) was served in a lacquered bowl with a decent variety of firm-fleshed fish. A hint of yuzu added interest to a seaweed and cucumber salad.
Draught Asahi and Kirin are popular with the Japanese businessmen who frequent Tomoe, but you'll also discover a fine range of saké and shochu. In the evening, there's a £15 per person minimum charge - take note, if you're not planning to order much. Service was well intentioned, but a little patchy.
