The last time we reviewed this unusually smart Sicilian restaurant, we were excited by the food - nicely balanced between rustic and sophisticated, Sicilian and pan-Italian. However, the early promise was only partly realised on our follow-up visit. Yes, the room remains an attractive white L-shape with comfortable booths, but the service was still distracted (and distracting), and food quantity and quality fell slightly short of the level that the prices demand.
For £12.50, a tuna salad starter needed to be special, but a quail's egg on top wasn't enough to flavour the unexciting fish. Octopus salad, with cherry tomatoes and potato purée, was appealing, but similarly short on zing. Monkfish osso buco (an odd description, there being no bone nor deep flavours involved) was less thrilling than it sounded, and the accompanying risotto over-buttered. And warm calf's liver salad was merely some tasty but not-so-tender liver set next to a green salad.
Attractive presentation and good bookends - small squares of bread, arancini, olives, almonds (after which Mennula is named) and cannoli - plus an all-Italian wine list with a well-chosen selection from Sicily's resurgent producers, swings the overall verdict to a thumbs-up: but it walks the line.

I was surprised this place actually got an award. Seeing as I went there this evening, not only was the service terrible (The 3 waitresses were unfriendly and unprofessional, they were in a conversation as we walked into the restaurant, they greeted us for a brief second only to continue on their conversation before leading us to our table) - the waitress who came to get our order was also quite rude, patronising to a point.
The starter was okay, nothing I would brag about or recommend to my friends. But it was the main course that was truly appalling. For the price-point the food was mediocre at best, the pasta was ordered al-dente but came out almost to the point of crumbling due to being boiled for too long. It was also extremely salty and dry, but after that point it was a matter of just finishing what I could finish due to my hunger.
The bill came out as around £80 for 2, certainly not cheap for this quality food.
Not reccomended.
I went to Mennula recently for a relatives birthday dinner as a special treat. We sat at the back of the restaurant as a party of 6. We had to wait about 15 minutes for the waitress to come and take our orders. Then, after ordering, it took an hour and a half to produce 6, surprisingly small starters. While waiting, nobody approached our table and offered us any bread or olives and didn't even apologize for the wait. To wait an hour and a half for a very simple dish (parcels of mozzarella and cream with tomatoes, olive oil and shavings of basil) is absurd. A nice starter, however eaten up in 2 seconds as I was starving after the wait. Another hour of waiting, and the main course arrived. My lamb shank with a white polenta and spinach side looked and smelt delicious. I took a bite and spat it out. The lamb wasn't seasoned and was utterly tasteless and completely bland. There was much left on my plate and after two and a half hours waiting, I would expect the highest of standards. The cod that a friend had was much too salty and couldn't finish it. After a disappointing main, dessert came, quicker this time, about 20 minutes later. I had the Sfinci, typical Sicilian doughnuts which were very oily. The tiramisu, which frankly wasn't a tiramisu, was more like cream on a thin pastry base. The waitress understood that we had not enjoyed our meals so gave us the coffee on the house. Overall, over-priced, tasteless and very slow service. Would not recommend this restaurant.
If you want great Sicilian food I suggest you go there. They have great food, great service. It was my mothers birthday and they couldnt do enough. The chef came to say happy birthday and explained the history behind Sicilian food! Amazing experience, will definitely be returning and recommending!!
Mennula,
Last Friday was our anniversary and recently we had been to Sicily and were a little disappointed with the food over there...
So after seeing mennula on that Gordon Ramsey show thought that it would be nice place to try and bring back the great time we had in Sicily and for my Italian girlfriend to show me that Italian food isn’t that bad, me being a chef for over 26yrs etc...
What a disappointment.... On arriving we were shown our table and the staff were quite attentive, the problem was the head chef (recognised him from show) had his back to us talking to another table, normally I wouldn’t mind but being a very small/pokey restaurant it was like he was on top of us, they must of been regulars as we over heard nearly all the conversation unfortually...
The bread arrived, which was excellent and then my starter crab with potatoe and cress salad. Well the plate was slate and the poached quail egg warm and the crab cold and some sauce done in a modern style pull across plate, didn’t like a luke warm plate. When we finished the chef asked if we like it and my girlfriend asked what he would recommend for a main course that was Sicilian he said that a couple of the dishes authentic but the rest were from all over the country (defeating the purpose I thought of mennula)
Mains arrived, partner’s meal very nice pasta venison dish though my duck dish i could of had in any French bistro or at home definitely not Italian or Sicilian...
Desserts were okay and wine and service good, it did make me laugh when we left that the chef had moved to another table and was chatting up 3 young ladies and even the waiters looked a bit worried...
Possibly the programme has gone to the chefs head and he should go back to the basics....
Won’t be returning....

The worst restaurant I have ever been to. Wouldn`t recommend it to anyone and completely agree with Nataliya, it is hard to undesrtand why Gordon included Mennula in the best restaurant competition. Not only that but I also know for a fact that several employees who have left the company are owed their wages or part of their wages. I find it ridiculous and very unethical. I will never support a restaurant that is unethical and treats its emplyees badly by not paying them for their hard work.
Sadly went there expecting great food etc., but service was slow, food was cold and pretty tasteless. The Main course (steak) was tough and we ended up leaving some.
Nobody asked why, the waiting staff looked embarrassed.
My wife ordered a dessert and I ordered a whisky which never came.
Don't go here you will be disappointed, it's hard to understand how Gordon Ramsay included it in his best english restaurants review there are so many great places to eat in London and this isn't one of them.
