Although Bistrot Bruno Loubet is the restaurant at the Zetter hotel, it doesn't feel like a hotel dining room. The big windows looking on to St John's Square help, as does the slightly quirky decor, but most of all it's the sheer joie de vivre of Bruno Loubet's menu.
From starters such as beetroot ravioli, rocket salad, fried breadcrumbs and parmesan (fast becoming a classic), or own-made duck pastrami, coleslaw and piccalilli, to mains such as pan-fried sea bream with cauliflower and parsley purée and squid ink stew, or rabbit 'tournedos' with artichoke barigoule and lovage pesto - there's an inventiveness at work that makes every dish seem like a must-try. And we defy anyone to resist chocolate fondant with a salted liquid fudge centre, or not be intrigued by the green peppercorn ice-cream accompanying English strawberries and lemon marshmallow.
Prices aren't greedy, either on the menu or on the wine list, the latter having lots of choice by the glass and carafe. The adjacent bar ensures a fine set of cocktails too. Not a classic French restaurant, then - and all the better for it.

Facilities
Tables outdoors ( 9, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking advisable, Separate rooms for parties ( seating 40-50 ), Disabled ( toilet )Disappointing. Food was ok, but this place doesn't come close to deserving a Time Out Critic's Choice.
Lazy service (not awful, but not up to scratch).
Lazy chefs; why green beans and mange tout in March? Why not the much more delicious (and incidentally local and seasonal) Swiss chard, savoy cabbage, or purple sprouting brocoli.
And sadly nothing like the delicious pudding described by the Time Out food critics. Instead something that would have been more at home On the Starbcks counter as a
Cheesecake' than in an allegedly inventive Frenchie-sort-of a place. The waiter assured me it was homemade but I am very sorry I just don't believe it. Where did Bruno Loubet learn to cook this 3663 style desert?
Save your money and go to Trullo, Morito, Otto Lenghi, or the Modern Pantry where the service consistently shines and they really understand good food.
Easy going, ambient but with impeccable waiting staff and wonderfully cooked inventive and extensive dishes. I'll be back.
Great food, great wine, very friendly service, I'd come back time and time again.
I have been to this restaurant many times now and the food and ambience has always been amazing.
The main problem is the service. Waiters don't really know what they are doing and there doesn't seem to be much organisation.
We had to call waiters to order, to take our dishes, to provide new glasses for wine etc. This is ashame. If the service was sorted it would be our favourite london haunt.
Also the front of house is a bit of a plonker.....shabbily dressed, couldn't care less arrogant attitude.
Love this place - stayed at the Zetter (ajoining hotel) for our anniversary last year and have kept coming back to this restaurant. Very reasonably priced, delicious food. On one occasion my rabbit was undercooked, so the maitre de sent it straight back, gave it to us for free and gave the whole table free deserts. Really impressive service
Very disappointed - especially for the price! There were 9 of us and the waiter forgot to place orders for two of the meals!. My 'medium to well done steak' was bright pink, bloody and raw - for £23.80 that is unforgivable. There was no offer of bread or anything while we sat there for half an hour waiting to order our food. One of the meals that was forgotten, arrived just as the rest of us were finishing. when we asked the waiter if it was because he had forgotten to place the order, he said 'yes i forgot.' but no apology. None of us will be going back. there are much better places in london
A thoroughly disappointing lunch. Bad atmosphere, bad service. One dish - sea trout and citrus ketchup - was the worst thing we've eaten for a long while. Lacklustre throughout, dull wine and disinterested people. Not what we were expecting.
I had an meal here a few months back and I can categorically say it is the best place I have eaten in the Clerkenwell /Farringdon area.
Not only was the service good, but the food was great! Delicious and bountiful! The sommelier was very helpful and as a result I had the perfect wine to accompany the meal. Between me and my girlfriend we had 2 starters, 2 mains, 1 dessert, 1 bottle of water, 1 bottle of white and a glass of fabulous red all for £86. If you’re after a good meal – look no further.
My friends and I are equally baffled by the rave reviews for Bistrot Bruno Loubet having eaten there on Friday night. There was unfortunate symmetry to our meal with a chewy pasta starter (the special of the day with a dusty-tasting seafood mousse filling) and a pudding best described as chewy rhubarb pizza. The Boudin Blanc certainly was lovely but I defy anyone to have recognised that it was guinea fowl and not chicken. Other dishes were unexciting and the potatoes dauphinoise had been nuked into an unappealing oil slick.
In terms of service when I arrived a couple was told by the maitre d' that they would have to wait because he had "to seat this lovely young lady". I was that lady and as I could easily have been his mother presumably he meant such insincere twaddle to be flattering. The place was very busy and clearly BBL wants to take advantage of this; tables have been squeezed in so no matter where I placed my chair our waitress banged into me each time she went to the diners behind. This was clearly pretty commonplace for her or at least I assume that was one reason why she did not bother apologising.
All in all a very disappointing evening and not at bistro prices.
However, I found the perfect antidote the very next day. A brunch of three courses for £15 including bread, pastries, a Bloody Mary, water and tea or coffee. Simple food, beautifully presented, that was tasty and served in generous portions and the service, from all concerned, was charming. Brasserie Roux please take a bow.
I went for dinner at bistrot loubet and was thoroughly impressed. My fiancé and I were planning a second visit as we left. The service was absolutely flawless, particularly front of house- we were welcomed by an utterly charming American gentleman who was attentive and efficient. The waiters were friendly and on the ball, and the food was wonderful- an imaginative yet tasty menu. I would recommend this restaurant to anyone, do pay it a visit.
Had dinner at Bistrot Bruno Lobet this week and it was one of the best meals I had had in London for a long time. The dishes reviewed were not on the menu but the pea soup and the quail and pistachio dodine were superb. Also tasted my wife's macherel and piccalilli tart and beef daube which were equally impressive. The restaurant was packed but the service was still relaxed yet attentive. If you like more formal dining then it is perhaps not the place for you but if you want somewhere lively and fun with really good food then I could not recommend more highly.
I don't agree with the review, went recently for lunch and the food was underseasoned and the confit lamb shoulder was cold and overly greasy. The service was lacking and we had to physically get up from our table twice and bring staff to our table to get more water and when we wanted to pay. I think Time Out's view, like many of the other reviewers is clouded by rosy glasses, speaking about how great he was when he left. No matter how great he might have been in his previous incarnations, this is a dud.
I for one think London would have been better off had he stay in Oz.
Went for lunch today and by accident had the same dishes as the reviewer here. I could not agree less with the 5 star rating, there are at least 20 other bistros i can think of that of better than this one. Fancy going to a good bistro go to Galvins instead.
