Situated in the heart of Mayfair, Mount Street Deli has a suitably exclusive air. Its well-heeled clientele are unlikely to blanch at the prices, though a stray tourist may well gasp on being charged more than £10 for an ordinary houmous and roast pepper sandwich with side salad. Still, this is what you'd expect from Caprice Holdings, the restaurant group with J Sheekey, Scott's and the Ivy under its umbrella.
Keeping things firmly in the family, much of the food is ferried over from the adjacent Scott's; daily specials tend to outclass some of the duller sandwich and bakery options. The salmon en croute special, for example, had a substantial fish centre encrusted with thick, crisp pastry. The standard spinach and ricotta roll, on the other hand, was limp and bland.
A breakfast menu includes own-made granola as well as boiled eggs with soldiers, and the tempting selection of sweets comprises oversized brownies, meringues and fruit tarts. On the deli's traditional shelving you'll find an abundance of international, upmarket goods, from Alain Milliat juices to Amedei chocolate.
