Bistro Delicat - Michael Franke
Don't come to this Austrian brasserie expecting dark wood, steins of beer and pork knuckles: with its chummy service and casual, camp vibe, it's styled more like the fashionable cafés of modern-day Vienna. The menu borrows from France (tuna tartare niçoise, croque monsieur, bouillabaisse) and northern Europe (perfectly cooked grilled scallops with pork belly), but what makes Délicat worth a special journey are the Austrian specialities.
The wiener schnitzel is as good a version as you'll find in London: the veal beaten thin, hand-breaded and crisply fried, and finished with nice details such as a muslin-wrapped half lemon. Schlutzkrapfen, a kind of ravioli from the borders of Italy, filled with curd cheese, spinach and sage butter, was robust but well made.
Some other dishes weren't quite as convincing. Beef consommé came cloudy, not clear, and the accompanying thin pancake slivers had sunk into the soup (though it tasted fine).
Cakes were conspicuously absent, so we finished with apricot knödel: sweet dumplings served with cooked apricot and ice-cream. The wine list, though brief, has one of the capital's best selections of Austrian bottles. On sunny days, the pavement tables are an additional draw.

Tables outdoors ( 5, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( children's menu; high chairs ), Booking advisable ( Thur-Sun ), Available for hireAs I'm going back to Austria I thought it'd be nice to have my fare-well-dinner at an Austrian restaurant. The first time that I had Austrian food abroad and I (we) were absolutely amazed. The food was fantastic! It's authentic, tasty, beautiful, delicious... oh I could on and on. I also really liked the interior: white and black tills on the walls and nice, simple, wooden tabels with lovely candles and place mats with your name on it (if you book). They service was friendly and attentive, always with a smile. I definitely recommend to give it a go!
Loved the food and wine selection, and will definitely be back for another visit. The Schnitzel is the best in town for sure!
Great schnitzel and goulash. The chocolate mousse is to die for. On the other hand the strudel is to forget, the pastry is not nice at all. Drinks are a huge let down as well the white wine was warm and the red wine cold? Service was very slow on one hand but rushed on another. We wanted a little break after our mains and said to come back later for the dessert order so they came back 3 minutes later!
Go there since they opened about a year ago, as just live around the corner. Only thing to say: amaaazing place. A unique local neighbourhood bistro with a great atmosphere & a delicious menu. The wine list could be a bit larger though. Staff has always been attentive and accomodate wishes even if not on menu. In summary a well executed little local restaurant. These are getting rare in London nowadays.
I am a regular at Bistro Delicat and really like the place and food, proberly due to me having lived in Austria for 3 years. I can confirm the comments before that the coffee is very bad, to understate it. I always loved the coffe in Vienna but at Delicat its nothing like that! The food however is superb, excellent taste, hearty portions (can be too big somtimes) and good prices. The service can be a mixed bag one day brilliant the next slow or another day too rushed. One day our mains arrived without us having finished our starters and the same happened to another customer on a different occasion Also i dont know why they say 'all day brunch' when its clearly not?
I went for dinner. Strangely there was an "All Day Brunch" advertised outside the menu consisted of no brunch at all. Our starter salads where enormous with much too much salad, they also served some fantastic bread with a cream cheese spread. I loved my main course Schnitzel and my wife loved her cod which came wrapped in parma ham and with a lentil stew. Because the starters where so big we didn't get any dessert. The drinks however where not as good the draught beer (Austrian) which I expected to be crisp, clean and cold was coldish and stale. And my wife's wine came from a carton. Our coffees where disgusting, bitter like they used the same coffee beans on several coffees. Service also wasn't the most efficient. Although the place was rammed full there where only 3 waiters one of which seemed to be more interested in his Blackberry than serving customers. All in all a good affordable place minus points only for the drinks and service.
Overrated. Can't figure out how this place made one of the top brunches in London. Coffee was like dish water. Juice wasn't fresh and was 3 quid. Service was slow. Drinks were put down at our table, then taken away to another. The food was Okay, but take a walk closer to Clapham Junction Station and in all honesty you'll find better.
Had dinner at Delicat on Saturday night, great evening, food was top notch (had the goose, yum!) and was a really good atmosphere, warm and cozy on a cold winter's night. Staff were really friendly and went out of their way to make sure we enjoyed our meal. Make sure to book a table though as it fills up quickly!
I had a grand dining experience at the Delicat. The food was superb, the wines and schnaps were excellent. Of almost equal importance, the cost-benefit ratio is incredible.
As regards the beef consomme, it was exactly as it should be (i.e., as clear as it gets if it's not the result of off-the-shelf convenience ingredients), and the slivers of pancake were perfect. Also, the latter were not just in the "upper strata of the soup for decorative effect" because that's not what they are supposed to be.
Delect has some very good french and german options, but the portions are not particularly large given the price (£6.50 for a bowl of porridge, for example, is a bit steep).
One of the waitresses is also a bit of a highly strung prima donna - not what you need to have to deal with on a sunday morning.
had brunch at Bistro Delicat yesterday. food was great, service was great, highly recommended..
