With its stupendous position overlooking the Serpentine in London's most famous park, right next to the Lido and the Diana Memorial Fountain, this café could serve mud and leaves washed down with a cup of mildew, and still attract customers. It's a lovely spot for an early evening cocktail, but the interior can be loud and clattery, so head outside if you can - there's masses of outdoor seating.
The breakfasts, lunches and small plates (the food comes courtesy of Company of Cooks) sound enticing, but some of our dishes lacked attention to detail. Pizzettes were low on cheese and herbs, and tiny for £4.75. Grilled chicken was dry - a yoghurt and harissa dressing gave it some oomph, but while the accompanying couscous was studded with lots of interesting things, it tasted too much of spring onion. Best was a moist, flavourful, well-seasoned burger, served with fat chips and relish.
Coffee was good too, as was a zesty lemon drizzle cake. Staff were very helpful, taking the initiative to set up a table for us inside as rain drenched the terrace.
