Bucking the trend for chain restaurants, Bromley's East Street is now home to a clutch of independent eateries, including Ed's - relaunched in spring 2011. Formerly known as Edward's, the installation of a top-end Josper grill has given this restaurant a new lease of life, with a reworked menu and a name that's more Stateside than home counties.
Although it aims to ape New York steakhouses (a hanger costs £9.50, going up to a huge bone-in ribeye at £26.50), the £9 triple burger steals the show. No, not three patties, but a trio of beef cuts: brisket, ribeye steak trim and onglet. Thick without being overwhelming, and moist without being too sloppy, this was a supremely good burger.
We went back a second time to check it wasn't a fluke -and it wasn't. The chips (£3) were pretty good, though huge buttermilk onion rings (£3.75) make a more interesting accompaniment.
Indulgent mac 'n' cheese (available with or without wild mushroom) and sweet potato gnocchi are hearty veggie options, though the creamed corn is a little pricey for the portion.
The dark chocolate mousse is best tackled with a companion - or opt for something lighter, such as the apple tart tatin. At last, Bromley has a restaurant that deserves to draw more than just a local crowd.

We love Ed's and will continue to go back. We have had melt-in-your-mouth steaks there a couple of times now and the burger is great. Staff are really friendly. It is not the cheapest place but as long as the food is good, will keep eating there. And no, I don't work there.
Had a great night here last Saturday, was a bit worried after reading the last comment and we also found one of the steaks (of the 6 offered on the menu) was off. When my husband enquired why this was we were told that all the meat is ordered in fresh and not frozen to ensure their quality. We were actually heartened by this and we liked that a steak wouldn't be pulled from the freezer and quickly defrosted so we could have a particular cut. The steak (I had the rib eye) and seabass were cooked to perfection, both excellent meals. I think the menus don't stress enough the provenance of the meat and the quality (not chain restaurant) way that Ed's do their great food. We'll definitely be back.
I am a chef of 25 years, the service tonight was awful. Rude and short!
Run out of 3 things we ordered, pathetic & impotent. It won't be long before Ed's disappears?
Shame it hAd great potential x
Amazing! Best food we've had in ages, fillet steak was 10 out of 10, will definatley be going back as soon as possible. Perfect mix of first class food and fabulous staff.
W are surprised to find all these 5 star ratings?! Went there last week (mid July) - Ribs so tough we had to send them back, steak very average. Very disappointing.
sorry folks - very disappointed when we went there last week. Our friends had been to Edwards - as it was previously known - and they were keen to try it out. As a party of 4 we tried ribs, fillet steak and rib eye steak. The ribs were tough - so we had to send them back, they cooked them up a bit more, but still tough on second try. Both the rib eye and the fillet were requested med rare and were pretty raw in the middle and unfortunately completely unseasoned, so not good. Salads, however, were good - especially the lentil one. They offered 2 free desserts to apologise for the ribs, iunfortunately the cheesecake was really dry - would I go back - sorry no - we saw other food being sent back too - so it wasn't just us being picky - maybe the chef was off that night - the guy in whites sitting at the bar when we left looked totally disinterested! However, the waitresses were really nice - and apologetic- I suggest they send the cooking staff to Dillingers in Hayes to see how ribs should be cooked - been going there for over 25 years and the ribs are always good!
My favourite restaurant in Bromley. I often visit with my friends and know we're guaranteed excellent food and fantastic atmosphere. Counting down the minutes to my next visit.
Best steak outside London for sure! Will try the burgers next time and the salads look good too, something for everyone.
Ed'sWoodfire Grill warmed the cockles of my heart - and those of my wife and guests, all of whom visited it for the first time on Sunday (Father's Day) following the enticing and excellent Time Out review. The food was fresh and superb - especially the burgers, and apple tart tatin. Two of my guests travelled from W9 and said they would willingly come again anytime! We'll be back!

As a couple of tourists from Florida, we were taken to Ed's Woodfire Grill in Bromley's East Street for dinner. It sounded great but we had no idea how great it was going to be. It really was worth the long haul from here. My wife had the mac 'n' cheese, which she said was to die for. I had the triple burger ditto. You guys have come a long, long way foodwise. Thanks.

Edwards was great , but the new Eds is even better. The Home cured salt beef and the hanger steak were fantastic, all washed down with a nice bottle of red wine and a big helping of great service_ I shall definately be back to try the Rib Eye ;)
Yep, ate there last week and you're right the burger is fabulous value and really beautiful flavour too. Beats a BBQ at my place!
