Tucked away on a pedestrianised strip of Hampstead Village that's as skinny as the jeans of the local glitterati, this cheerful white and lime green spot fuses an Italian-style gelateria with the health appeal of machine-dispensed frozen yoghurt and the likes of matcha (green tea) fruit smoothies.

Gelato isn't made on the premises, but bought in from north London producer Il Gelato di Ariela, whose standards are high. The dark, almost black, chocolate sorbet is a winning choice for evenings, but perhaps a bit heady in the morning. Our hazelnut and pistachio scoops had clear nutty flavours, and we loved the chewy, sour cherry pieces in the yoghurt-based amarena.

Slice of Ice's discerning choice of suppliers extends to L'Artisan du Chocolat, Teapigs and local cake makers (the brownie, and lemon and almond cake are terrific). Union lattes and cappuccinos are well made too. A few trendy white tables (and a toilet) are available for those who want to eat in.

Lovely little place, friendly staff and a range of great italian gelato (The yoghurt with sour cherries is especially tasty!) A welcome addition to the increasingly chain-filled hampstead village.

I was really disappointed with Slice of Ice. Great location and atmosphere but the ice cream is not nearly as good as Gelato Mio in Belsize Park.
