Tricked out like an Oaxacan taqueria, but under the cover of Brixton Market, Casa Morita is run by a husband-and-wife team: he's Mexican, and works in the open kitchen; she's English, and leads out front.
The cooking is mostly very good, with strong flavours and fresh ingredients. Its stock-in-trade is the humble corn tortilla, presented in various guises - from totopos to tacos and quesadillas - alongside a couple of traditional dishes, including mole negro and huevos rancheros.
We were particularly impressed by taco de chorizo, its crumbly meaty filling perfectly offset by a thin guacamole and chopped coriander, and a toasted veggie quesadilla layered with melted cheese and tiny pieces of diced onion.
But there were disappointments too: our rice came studded with corn in the traditional way, but was too bland and bloated to pass muster.
Meanwhile, the mole sauce is made using a base by Mayordomo, a famous Oaxaca brand name, then customised in-house.
Service, though cheerful and chummy, showed cracks under pressure. Plates and glasses were cleared prematurely, while an order for pudding came out ahead of our final round of savouries.
We sent it back, only for it to reappear two minutes later, because: 'It's ready now… if it gets cold you can ask for a fresh one.'
It lurked on the edge of our table, silently pressuring us to hurry up: not easy given that our cutlery had been removed, but not replaced.
So we ate with our hands, then on to the now-tepid plate of sweet plantains, not daring to request a replacement. Only mugs of hot, waxy, Oaxacan chocolate saved the day.
Portions are small, so it's easy to rack up around £15 to £20 a head, and that's without the cost of alcohol (making it around 50 per cent more expensive than its neighbours - Franco Manca is virtually opposite).
That said, it can be an attractive proposition for casual dates and groups of twentysomething friends.

The place has really got into its stride-they have built a frontage to keep the biting wind at bay-so its one of the cosiest eateries in the market,and they have more specials on the menu I spotted Albondigas after 7pm I ate the Enchiladas Suizas-which were delicious and managed a good sized bowl of Sopa Azteca.
Their spicing which I felt was a little tentative on my first visit (maybe guaging their customers palates?) is now full blown Mexican and all the better for it-and those lovely little bowls of something hot they put on the tables to dip your tortillas in seriously warms the tongue!

Most authentic Mexican food in London. Particularly rate the quesadillas!
For all that brixton village has to offer give this a miss.
Staff maybe friendly but this does not override the fact that the food is average and the portions small. 1.30 for a tiny glass of overcooked navhos was a joke even if they were needed for the smooth tangy spicy guac.
Margaritas were tasty but too small for a fiver especially when you see what you get next door.
All in all average Mexican in London, if your in brixton then queues for honest burger, the brick box, French and grace or francamanca and get you pennies worth and hear good to go with.

this looked a good place on passing-what a let down!Friendly smiles,great-so you wait all expectant-Need a magnifying glass to see the portions,bring your own table top grill to warm up the food,This is kit form tex-mex,dismal unappetising and pricey.
Good points; fun decor,free glasses water,nice if useless staff and you can always go shopping in the market for avocados and meaty things and spices to rustle up your own take on Mexico!.
This place is great. Time Out should really employ some critics that know about food and not kids who feel they need to be controversial to stand out. This review is another example of lazy reporting and such destain for anything South of the river that it's almost laughable. However, if they keep people who think like like this away from Brixton then i may have underestimated their brilliance.
Great atmosphere, friendly service, tasty food... absurdly small portions and dramatically overpriced.
Even after reading your review ,decided to give this place a try, rolled up with my own wine and hey ho they are licensed..you really ought to get your facts right ! I thought when I first read it it sounded a trifle spiteful..and comparing it to a pizzaria [no matter how good] was rather odd..might as well say theres a good kebab house thats cheaper round the corner !..Its Mexican and advertises itself as authentic..thats what I wanted to know about...and I was not disappointed...Huevos rancheros hit the spot..tried the tacos too and date cake..yeah 'heavy grubber' I am...portions could be bigger and cheaper but by the end I wasnt complaining, my partner enjoyed hers too. It is as authentic as possible and the picante salsa was reminiscent of Mexico..even tho I would have liked it hotter...Wahaca is hybrid by comparison..!
Been down twice now, and both myself and my girlfriend love the food and the atmosphere. The service is laid back though very efficient, and very friendly. We don't mind grabbing our own cutlery if they're busy, we're just happy to see so many people enjoying the food and happy they are busy! Both of us being from North America, we have very much missed real Mexican food and this is truly up to scratch. The best we've had in London and will return as often as we can.
Been here once and would not go again. The taste is not really the problem, although still not amazing. But the portion size was miniscule. £5 for a tiny taco with a thin spread of refried beans, some lettuce and a bit of guacamole?
In spite of the suggestion of patchy service, we decided to give this new place a go.

We went on a Saturday night, their first margarita night, so a special menu, mainly of tostadas and quesadillas was presented.
The chicken tostadas came piled with tasty chicken-no stringy greasy bits,freshly shredded lettuce and guacamole.
The quesadillas, vegetarian or chorizo were little nuggets of pure indulgence-the cheese, guacamole and crimson chorizo juices oozing out onto already sticky fingers-and here maybe the confusion arises over cutlery. Both dishes are traditionally eaten with your fingers-having visited Mexico several times I can vouch for that-but in the UK,particularly with the piled high tostada, our natural reaction is to reach for a knife and fork. As I doubt the owners have ever eaten this food with a knife and fork I get the feeling they hav nt yet got the message that some may want a less messy eating experience.
But, they ve apparently been open just over a month so I imagine in the fullness of time these kind of niggles will be ironed out. On our visit people,including ourselves seemed happy to spy the cutlery on the bar and help themselves in such a laid back atmosphere.
We ate far too much for just over £30 for 2 including a margarita each. Yes more expensive than Franco s -but a strange comparison as its a completely different eating experience!
p.s we are also old enough to be the 20somethings parents-and we spied another table of same!!
