Walking along King Street away from Hammersmith station, you might notice an agricultural theme to the licensed premises: The Hop Poles, The Ram, The Plough and Harrow.

So it's apt that the owners of the now defunct Engineer in Camden have chosen to return the former Ruby Grand to its original porcine name.

Their description for this operation is 'pub and pantry': there's a small shop on one side selling a better sort of takeaway food, as well as wine, coffee, tea and pastries.

The 'pub' part is, however, a misnomer. It's a very attractive room, painted largely white and cream with a few baroque flourishes.

A good pub should at least have good beer, but out of three bottled varieties and six draught options, the only of interest were Deuchar's IPA and 'The Hog's Best Bitter'. Which brewery makes it, I asked our Aussie waiter.

After departing to consult a higher authority, he returned with, 'A local one called "Caledonian".' Edinburgh is 330 miles away: perhaps that would count as local in Australia.

Staff in general seemed a bit harried and could have done with more briefing on the menu: most questions we asked resulted in a trot off in search of enlightenment.
Drinkers are better served by the rest of the list, which includes a compact wine list offering glasses, bottles, 'pots' and takeaway prices.

The food we had was decent, although expensive. A starter of tuna with green beans, grilled onions and anchovies was punchy; another of tuna and salmon 'sashimi' had an overbearingly garlicky dressing.

Mains too were up and down - a fan of roast lamb came with roast potatoes but the addition of chewy sun-dried tomatoes and yogurt sauce didn't promote harmony. Grilled bream with lentils and salsa verde, however, was a much simpler, and better, combination.

Things ended on a high note with wobbly vanilla panna cotta with poached rhubarb, and a 'selection' of cheese with biscuits. Does two count as a 'selection'? Technically, yes; hospitably, no.

Treat this as a restaurant and you'll be satisfied; pubgoers might prefer something a bit less refined.

I had heard great reviews and so my husband and I looked forward to a lovely Sunday lunch there last weekend. Unfortunately we didn't get as far as being seated. When I did intercept a waitress to ask if it was ok to have a look at the garden, she didn't even raise a smile or to say that she would be along to see us shortly. The garden was pleasant enough but noisy with children running around and we had to step over a couple of dogs en route! So we came back inside, found what looked like a lovely table and I approached another waiter to ask if it was ok to take a seat. He too was busy and asked us to wait while he tended to another order. 2 minutes was enough of a wait. We were clearly in everyones way – two unnecessary customers – so feeling very uncomfortable, we left and headed for the nearest restaurant on the same strip, the Mahdi, an Iranian restaurant which was extremely welcoming, and the food was wonderful.

I booked The Pantry at the Hampshire Hog for a party (drinks, canapes) of 25 people. I couldn't be more pleased with how it went; the manager (Joss) got in touch with me right away and was very proactive in helping make the arrangements, and staff on the night were excellent. Wine and canapes were great too. I really liked this pub, it's nicely laid out and decorated, good atmosphere and (so far) not too crowded. The Pantry was a great space for a party too, semi-private, just right. Based on my experiences, I'd say the teething troubles reported in the review have been overcome.

We loved the Hampshire Hog. Visiting London for the weekend, we were looking for a relaxed gastropub with good food and were not dissapointed. The atmosphere is friendly and busy. We had their excellent pork plate (my only complaint was that they could not make the plate for 3 people --only 2 or 4 portions). Then we had steak and prok belly, prepared simply and cooked well. The wine selection was good for the food served, and the sommelier had real enthusiasm and knowledge once we started to discuss.

Although i was expecting a gastropub, the hampshire hog is a delightful restaurant with a pub feel to it. We went for dinner last night and was welcomed by engaging staff and polite service. The food was yummy, especially the sharing starters. I enjoyed my main which was duck leg confit, however i do feel that there could be more choices. Overall i would recommend this place for dinner or even a casual drink. I look forward to going back.

Having walked past this place every day on my way to work I decided to finally go in for dinner the other night. I was a little sceptical after some of the comments below but I can only sing praises for the place! The atmosphere was relaxed but staff were attentive (our waiter was charming) and the interior is warm but fresh. My partner and I shared the Grand Selection followed by the Cod and Steak. The starter was delicious and presented beautifully and the meat and fish for the main were cooked to perfection. Wine list has a great selection and the cocktail I had was delicious. Will definitely be returning again soon to this sparkling gem!

I have been to the Hog three times now and just LOVE it. The old Ruby Grand which I always walked straight passed is now completely changed. The Hog is light and friendly. The staff are great and love kids. Food is delicious and its just what we needed in the area.

Contrary to the negative feedback below I have nothing but praise for the new Hog. I've been in several times since the opening, for breakfast, drinks and dinner and have had a superb experience every time. Yummy food, obliging staff and a lovely atmosphere abound. Any inconsistencies and issues have clearly been a result of teething problems and when raised were dealt with tactfully and obligingly. I think some people should have a bit of patience before lambasting anywhere so fickly on the web. Keep up the good work!

I liked the Engineer and was pleased to find them newly round the corner from where I work. I went during lunch - enticed to act as guinea pig for 50% off. The discount definitely helped ease the bitter taste I left with (figuratively speaking). Soup and Steak, that'd be easy I'd thought... That quick soup starter - nice but under-seasoned - took just under an hour to arrive! Teething problems as maybe, but after obviously having to cancel my main, the response received was, "Well if you'd have said when you arrived I would have told you to order something else". A nicely rehearsed apology. Palmed off with a small take-away salad, that didn't quite appease the appetite for steak I'd thought I could smell cooking, I left giving the benefit of the doubt. A month on, the doubt still remains and the discount has not. The food more hit than miss but not worth the price or the wait. I raise a glass to the manager who generously bought a round for the few colleagues I embarrassingly took with me the 2nd time, but so far my only tips to the waiting staff have been 'Service with a Smile and More Speed Less Haste'.

It was great to hear that we were getting a proper gastropub... The food is good but not amazing. The prices are a little high. The menu needs to be looked at - out of a party of 4 not one of us was inspired by the starters.. we all ended choosing from the bar snack menu. Service has not been great on any of our 4 visits. We keep hoping things will improve... we want them to succeed!

Have eaten here three times over the past 10 days.Dinner with a celiac friend was excellent. The staff were fully versed in the gluten free choices for her.
Sunday lunch of roast pork was sublime served with a generous side portion of vegetables. Great coffee too!

The decor and service is unpretentious and the atmosphere very 'casual'. All is forgivable if the food lived up to its billing. My osso bucco milanese was disappointing, the veal was tough and dry and risotto overcooked. I sense the intention was there but was let down by the execution. I am sure once the teething issues are ironed out things will return to its glorious past.

Variable is the key word that comes to mind after our visit last week-The space is lovely, and the menu looks great. We were"served' by six or seven people during our lunch - service ranged from incompetent to cold/efficient at best. The actual food was a let-down- a chicken/avocado wrap looked and sounded great-however was depressingly short of chicken & avocado & taste - likewise a £14 chicken salad which was uninspired & bland. I'm sure these are teething troubles however when a steak & chips is priced at £26, yes £26, they really need to up their game to seriously take on the rest of the gastro pubs in the area.

The Engineer was an old favourite, and delighted if surprised when the team (or half of them) arrived in a new guise on King Street - not the most salubrious of roads. Simply but beautifully arranged space, airy and light, very friendly and attentive staff for our late morning visit, delicious roast mushrooms and garlic on toast with goat's curd (breakfast/brunch) and 'wounded eggs' (scrambled with chorizo and it's oil). And no raised eyebrows about the energetic 1 year old accompanying us. Plans to return as soon as possible to work our way through the lunch and dinner menus. After winter the huge garden space will no doubt be packed - and if lunch there comes close to the long afternoons in the gardens of the Engineer then it will be a splendid summer in W6.
