The cheekily named S&M café pays tribute to the great greasy spoons of yesteryear, and appeals to both local hipsters and the more among curious tourists. A determinedly un-gourmet selection of stodgy British favourites forms the menu: sausage and mash being the mainstay, with a good choice of meat (including steak and horseradish) and vegetarian (caerphilly and leek, mushroom and tarragon) versions.
Two bangers, mash and gravy costs £7.95, add a quid for a third sausage. Generously proportioned pies, fish and chips, sponge puddings and a few token salads fill up the list. Service was cheery, the food consistently hearty, and everything is accompanied by a healthy dose of nostalgia.
Sadly, trouble is afoot somewhere: where S&M had a half-dozen branches a couple of years ago, it's now down to just this one, in Spitalfields.

I can see why.
If we had paid greasy spoon prices the food would have been tolerable. As we paid over-inflated prices due to the 'Cafe' theme and a few bawdy interior posters, the food was bad. Rubbery cheese on toast; stoggy, bready sausages, and burnt battered fish was staple.
On the positive side the waitress was jolly.
