Canteen's warm globes of light shine out like beacons in the grey back-end of the Royal Festival Hall. Inside is a buzzy restaurant that looks too 1980s for comfort, but is cosy and not excessively noisy, despite the austere steel and glass. Tables are well-spaced, but the best seats are the dinky stuffed-leather booths. Would that the food - an enticing read - were as good. We'd admired the piled-high plates of fish and chips flying from the kitchen, but were disappointed by crumb-coated parcels of cod, and bitty, greasy pan-bottom chips. Own-made mushy peas were lovely though. Beef stew, presented in a faux country-kitchen dish, had rich gravy with stray strands of beef and not much else. A daily roast - in our case duck legs - was much better, but had soggy skin. Puds were equally mixed: raspberry ripple bore no trace of raspberries or ripples (it was the wrong ice-cream), but rice pudding was perfect (creamy grains of rice topped with quality raspberry jam). Through it all staff were attentive and friendly, and their geniality was infectious. With food to match, Canteen would be a top choice on the South Bank.

Tables outdoors ( 30, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( colouring books; high chairs; nappy-changing ), Booking advisable ( 5.30-8pm; not accepted lunch Sat, Sun ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet ), Takeaway serviceWhat an appalling experience. Went with my 3 month old son, my wife and very close family friend for a Friday brunch.
1) we were tabled right out the way of the main restaurant - not because it was full either. My gut told me this might be because we had a baby with us. I tried to ignore this initial feeling.
2) This initial feeling was later confirmed. I had to ask three times for a "bowl of hot water" to heat the milk for my baby. Initially they brought a small cup. OK, waiter not had children before this was excusable. We asked again for a BOWL of hot water. 10 minutes later, still no bowl. Catching the waitress whilst she was playing with paper at the back of the restaurant, she then brought 50ml of hot water in a tiny metal jug........
One unapologetic manager and 7 minutes later a wine cooler of hot water. Oh, and someone to take our food order.
3) We were then talked about within hearing distance by the offending waitress. For the rest of the meal we were approached every 2 minutes, hanging around our shoulders to see if we were finished. We felt intimidated and harassed. This had an air of the sarcastic, or perhaps "lets get rid of you asap".
As a young family, we have never received such an unwelcoming, unhelpful approach from a restaurant. The food was good, but quite frankly not good enough to make up for such a horrible and vile behaviour. .
Should have listen to my initial feelings after-all - this place does not like children. Families beware!
Very disappointing, service slow and roast chicken when it came was very dry and overcooked, garlic mayo had de-coagulated and was unpleasantly greasy. white wine was warm! nothing to recommend, and overpiced.
