Offering largely UK-sourced produce, much from nearby Kent, Franklins gets full marks for provenance. But the feel-good factor doesn't end there, as the restaurant offers a small but well-put-together, seasonal menu with plenty of appeal for lovers of Modern European food.
On this occasion, crisp and delicate salt beef fritters were paired with a zingy radish and caper salad. To follow, chicken, bacon and leek pie, with short, crumbly pastry, showed a remarkably light touch. Even raspberry ripple ice-cream made a point of showcasing its seasonality, bursting with plump whole fruit.
Staff went out of their way to make our visit enjoyable. There are three eating areas: a table near the bar offers a laid-back bistro feel; the restaurant at the rear is great for leisurely dining and allows you to peer into the kitchen; for private parties or a cosy tête-à-tête, ask for a table downstairs. Decor is modern: simple dark wood floor and furnishings, huge restored mirrors and exposed brick walls hung with colourful art (for sale).
Franklins is popular with locals as somewhere to go for a smart night out, a relaxed Saturday brunch, or simply good food in stylish surroundings.

Tables outdoors ( 4, pavement ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs; nappy-changing facilities ), Booking advisable, Separate room for parties ( seats 34 ), Available for hire, Disabled ( toilet )I love Franklins and feel I need to post to record this fact, to balance the strangely unenthusastic review below. I find their menu is always a good combination of the surprising and innovative and the traditional (heavy on the meat/game, mind, which isn't to everyone' s taste). It's perfect whether you just want a bacon butty or a gourmet 3 course lunch. Have been countless times with various friends and family, never been disappointed here, and always had exemplary service. Easily my favourite place to eat in East Dulwich, if not the whole of South London.
Ate here once, drank here over the years off and on. Food not too bad. Drinks, attitude service and "on"-ness of the beer disappointing. Frankly I avoid it these days.
