Understandably, Sardo Canale doesn't take bookings for the eight tables in its walled garden beside the Regent's Canal. After all, who would choose not to sit beneath the boughs of a 150-year-old olive tree, imported - we were assured - from Sardinia. On a warm night arrive between 6pm and 7.30pm to have any chance at all of scooping one of 28 coveted places. The sustenance is of similar Italian provenance, from an exemplary Sardinian wine list, kicking off at £14.50 a bottle, to specialities such as fregola ai frutti di mare (a typical dish made with pearls of semolina - Sardinia's answer to a seafood risotto), the classic spaghetti with bottarga (dried grey mullet roe) and olive oil, or perhaps the salsiccia sarda (home-made aromatic sausage, charcoal-grilled and served with stewed shallots). Desserts are in the same vein - try the seadas, a traditional pastry filled with warm pecorino and dusted with sugar and honey.

We went here yesterday for my birthday and it was meant to be a special treat but unfortunately it didn't live up to our expectations. We ended up paying 42 pounds a head and it wasn't particularly enjoyable. We had to ask twice for our drinks, and that was just the water. My husband's Spaghetti alla bottarga was served lukewarm and the pasta was completely undercooked, not al dente but just plain hard. For mains we had Lamb shank in Parma ham with vanilla mashed potatoes and broccoli (the vanilla didn't go at all). As soon as it arrived I was disappointed. The presentation was unappettising, as if it had come from a canteen, the sauce looked curdled. The meat was way too salty and the texture was simply mush, it could have been any meat, and we love lamb! My friend had ordered a different lamb dish from the set menu but received the same as us anyway. We accepted it so we could all eat together. We had panna cotta for dessert which was way too gelatinous, more like a cream jelly than the classic dessert and again the presentation of the caramel sauce was not pleasant too look at, nor was it very tasty. My sister-in-law enjoyed her linguine with fresh crab meat but was sorely disappointed by a very dry and tasteless dessert made of ricotta in pastry. Another friend of ours had stuffed baby squid and a fillet of halibut both of which he enjoyed. We had dry rose wine to accompany the food which as also very nice. No special attention was given to the circumstance that this was a birthday lunch nor that we had child sitting at our table. All in all we wished we had gone to The Engineer across the road. Much tastier and much better atmosphere. We will not be back, sorry to say.
It's reputation is completely at odds to it's reality. Need somewhere decent to eat in narly camden, stumble across it and you'd be happy.. but think of it as a fantastic Primrose Hill Italian / go there expecting something akin to Polpo and you'll be grossly disappointed. Overpriced, bad chill out music, nouveau cuisine rather than high. Some bits are a pleasant surprise, like the mozarella starter is very generous and so creamy (with dreadful balsamic syrup squirted beneath it). Swordfish is disgusting throughout menu. needs to be more exciting and less expensive. The worst thing is the room you eat in- a tiny cheap cafe type area where you can hear the waitresses screeching about their weekends by the till/ bar area. £60 for average starters, 2 pasta dishes and cover
. Next day We did Da Polpo for £32 and it was phenomenal.
I was so disappointed especially since this place was highly recommended! The "lamb falling off the bone" was way too salty and came with mashed potato that tasted like a school lunch. Food was average at best. Not worth it for the price you pay.
A great place for a celebration or just to go when you fancy splashing the cash. The Taste Card deal makes this much easier though and still the food is carefully prepared and the staff make you feel very cared for and not like you're a less class customer for using the card. Fairly authentic Italian experience for Camden, I don't imagine you'd be that disappointed after an evening at this place,
