Lunch-only Abbevilles offers swanky Claphamite cuisine at bargain-basement Brixton prices. Its Gallic-influenced menu lists dishes with one-word titles - 'scallops', 'chicken', 'gammon' - followed by helpful one-line descriptions. A deliciously light cheese and spinach soufflé starter with parmesan cream was perfectly formed and piping hot, while crispy duck in filo pastry had a wonderful home-cooked flavour. The only let-down was a helping of chewy tuna in a fish pie otherwise packed with generous chunks of flaky salmon. We liked the homely interior and the eager-to-please employees, and firmly believe that Abbevilles's pioneering work with the First Step Trust (a charity that assists people with learning disabilities find their feet in the workplace) should earn it far more credit than it currently gets.
