Luxuries aren't a priority at this dog-eared Lebanese café: those smoking shishas out front are warmed by electric fan heaters instead of lamps and drink tea brewed from bags rather than leaves, while the interior is like a Middle Eastern greasy spoon - the Formica tables even boast red and brown sauce dispensers. For all this, few local establishments have such a homely feel: nary a customer arrives or leaves without first sharing a joke and a smoke with Ali the owner, who seems happiest stoking coals for the pipes on a makeshift burner set on the pavement. The food is excellent: creamy houmous was a pleasure to mop up with a pile of warm pitta; a main of shish taouk (chicken kebab with garlic sauce) was tender and pleasantly pungent, another of minced lamb kofte juicy and generous. Abu Ali is a book that shouldn't be judged by its rather battered front cover.
