Class divides persist in the Jewish community, and if St John's Wood is on one end of the scale, this restaurant at the grimy end of Edgware's high street is definitely at the other. From its nondescript frontage, you could easily mistake B&K for a funeral parlour, and the average age of the clientele doesn't exactly lend the place a glamorous look, but the atmosphere inside offers an unbeatable throwback to an old East End Yiddish spirit that is fast disappearing. The food is homely and heartwarming, with chicken soup like mamma used to make, and portions of salt beef so big we needed a doggy bag to take the leftovers home with us. Moribund appearances notwithstanding, it's no wonder people come from miles around to visit the place.
