Such is the popularity of the cafeteria at Kenwood House that, frankly, we give it a wide berth at weekends, when the place is overrun with extended family groups; weekdays are another matter. You can avoid the unruly toddlers and panting canines at the front by taking your tray of victuals straight from the service area to the bucolic terrace, which shows this place at its best.

We've been disappointed by the scones and the occasional piece of dried cake (tip: the adjacent Steward's Room sells many of them wrapped for take-out and in noticeably better nick), but otherwise the food is impressive. Sandwiches (Singleton cheddar with caramelised onion, say, or coronation chicken) may seem pricey, but the ingredient quality is first-rate and portions generous.

Thoughtfully conceived and carefully cooked hot meals showcase seasonal British ingredients and artisan sources; we've even seen samphire-topped fish here. Soups (get the meal deal that includes bread, British cheese and fruit), sausages and mash and the cooked breakfasts are exemplary - as, usually, are the courteous staff.
