Just five minutes from the hustle and bustle of Oxford Street, Chisou is a welcoming oasis of calm with its cream and pale wood interior. The menu is packed with much of the usual repertoire - sushi, noodles, tempura and grilled dishes.
Saké is taken seriously, with a regularly changing specials menu. Prices are higher than average, so the bill can mount up if you aren't careful. On the plus side, the dishes are often quite generously proportioned.
A large plate of beef tataki featured velvety slices of meat in a nicely balanced ponzu sauce. Crispy soft-shell crab was equally ample, and the complimentary hijiki seaweed salad appetiser was a nice touch.
From the drinks menu, we sampled some fragrant and refreshing shochu and shiso sours. Surprisingly, however, the sushi assortment on our most recent visit was a little lacklustre: the rice slightly too soft (which prevented the fish from shining), and the filling of a badly rolled tuna maki spilling out.
We also found the service to be inconsistent, becoming less attentive as the night went on. We'd expected better from Chisou.

Tables outdoors ( 2, terrace ), Babies and children welcome ( high chairs ), Booking essential, Separate rooms for parties ( seating 12-20 ), Takeaway serviceI love this japonese restaurant 2 mins away from Oxford Circus. The food is fantastic and reasonably priced. The service is impecable and the atmosphere is relaxing, welcoming and with a touch japonese elegance.
Strongly advice to try it for yourself.
You reviewer certainly went to a different restaurant too, or perhaps he was just feeling grumpy that night. Mrs Diner and I went for lunch last week: the sashimi (particularly the mackerel) was outstanding, we had buttery, melting braised eel sushi, quality soft shelled crabs, and very good fried bean curd. I loved the beef (far too much, even for us) and the range of sakis was impressive. Warning: the portions are huge, particularly the "appetisers". And at £72 for two without drinks, this was not too pricey for what turned into quite a banquet. Oh, and the service was extraordinarily attentive (though one person - just one - needs a can of Sure. Please tell her quickly, rest of the staff, as I'm returning next week!).
This was some of the best Sushi I have eaten ! very fresh.
Sounds like Frank went to a different restaurant! Chisou is often mentioned as one of, if not, 'the' best sushi restaurant in London! Like the decor, the prices and service are not pretentious either. - I have eaten there at least 10 times and taken many friends there. The service has always been superb.
Dear Frank.
I am sorry you felt ripped off with Chisou, it is not what we wanted you to feel and i am not sure how you came to ordering the sake called Tamagawa, the only sake ever to have won the gold medal in Japan and The USA at the same time and you are wright it isn't cheap but isn't the most expensive either. I will ask the waitress that served you how you came to ordering Tamagawa so that this does not happen to other guests. she is on holiday for the next few days.
You are also wright about our restaurant been quiet on the night of your visit and maybe the waitress was a bit too keen to serve or clear the tables but i do wish that you would have mention this to the floor manager at the time so that would of delt with it strait away. we are happy give you back the sevice charge and tip you left if you want to contact the restaurant.
A rip-off, beware of the waitress talking you into trying sake. We (2) paid GBP125 for spinach rolls and chopped salmon for starters, followed by sashimi and eel with rice. Food was GBP62 - not cheap, but ok. Food was decent. However, 2 glasses each of sake recommended by the waitress set us back GBP49, just insane. The waitress was all smiles and polite, but just trying to get your money. Also, we could not finish our food patiently. Although the place was half-empty, they constantly checked whether we had finished and literally dragged the plates away while we were still chewing. There are plenty of better Japanese places in London with better food and most notably a more honest approach.
