This hip pizza joint, located in the heart of Shoreditch near Old Street Station, is set in a converted fire station on Tabernacle Road, complete with original tiles, outdoor seating and a unique warehouse vibe. With maroon awnings out the front and a trendy bar in the basement, Yard is always crammed with media types at lunch time, and a stylish after-work crowd that picks up on Friday nights. Famous for its square yard-length pizzas which can be ordered with up to four different toppings, the restaurant has a cult Shoreditch following and locals love the salads as well as the shredded duck pizza with Hoi Sin sauce and cucumbers, and the rocket and Parma ham pizza.

What is 'following'?Couldn't disagree more with the last person! I love Italian food and have quite high standards when it comes to dining out - but I loved Yard. One of the best pizzas I've ever tasted at a very reasonable price. Served on a wooden platter, the stonebaked base was very tasty and perfectly cooked, and had lovely fresh ingredients for the topping. And the topping was just that - not just a crappy flat same old same old... but hunks of buffalo mozzarella, tangy cheese, fresh rocket leaves and a generous helping of pepperoni (which I asked for as an extra). Perfect pizza. For someone who can find pizza disappointing or boring, that says a lot! Ambiance was perfect - great vibe and fairly busy but nice and cosy and private for my date! Service was very prompt so no waiting around which I normally find very frustrating, specially when you're ready to go and have to wait half an hour for the bill... 9/10 from me.
I had one of the worst pizzas of my life in Yard yesterday! First of all it was freezing cold in there, with little atmosphere. Then the food was really appalling. My partner ordered the Carne pizza, which was "ok" according to him, but burnt black at the bottom. My "field mushroom" pizza had button mushrooms on it, which had only seen horse manure to grow on and could only dream of fields. When I pointed this out to the waitress she said she could get me another pizza in a tone that showed she couldn't care less. As we were in a hurry and wanted to eat our pizzas at the same time (call us old fashioned if you like!) I said it wasn't what I expected but I'd eat it and she left us with "I'll see what I can do" - and never came back! Not only were there no field mushrooms on my pizza but the ordinary mushrooms on there were old, rubbery and tasted rather foul and I decided halfway through (I have fairly low standards in food and don't give up that easily) that I really couldn't eat it. We told the waitress we were unhappy with our meal. She promptly whisked our plates away and then called the manageress who just didn't seem to want to hear about what we had to say and only very grudgingly offered not to charge us for the so called field mushroom pizza. So, rubbish food, rubbish service and rubbish customer service... Thank you Yard!
