An utterly authentic Indonesian restaurant in London’s West End, Bali Bali goes from strength to strength, constantly gaining new fans among locals and visitors alike. Classically decorated in simple tones and unfussy furnishings, Bali Bali has a pleasingly relaxed, unpretentious atmosphere and efficient service from staff who know the menu well. For the many years that Bali Bali has been a fixture on the London dining scene the kitchen has only improved, perfecting the traditional regional Indonesian dishes which delight customers with their balance of flavour and heat. The lunchtime and pre-theatre menus are an ideal introduction to Indonesian food or, if you can’t decide, simply give chef free reign over your dining experience.

I'm straining to understand what the outsize praise is for in this restaurant. It makes some good dishes, yes, but also plenty of mediocre ones. The decor is tacky and the room is cramped. Service is another weak point. It's friendly enough but the waiters disappear once you've ordered the first course. They may also get your order wrong, as they did mine. All in all it's a decent place but I find the adulation for Bali Bali excessive given its mediocrity on just about every level.
Having dined at the Bali Bali over many years, the food just seems to get better and the service is excellent, friendly and helpful. Also the prices are great - very reasonable for excellent food.
