When the going gets tough, the tough need to chill out with a cold beer and a delicious curry. Hop and Spice in Balham, London, is the perfect place to share superb Sri Lankan cuisine with friends and family, and the curry-house-come-disco interior with golden Buddha statues and kooky lamps is a fun place to forget all about the hustle and bustle of big city living. Restaurateur Bahi Sivalingam has devised a clever sharing-style Thali menu alongside classic curries like the Kerralan chicken simmered with roasted spices, coconut cream and fresh coriander. Hop and Spice has a brilliant beer menu, and we love the Kandy Mess – a traditional Eton Mess with a passion fruit and mango twist.

We recently had the best curry experience at Hop & Spice. I haven't come across this type of cusine before- similar to Indain, but lighter and full of flavour. We ordered a number of tapas sized portions, which were all fabulous. I'd say the stand out dishes were the chilli chicken, coconut lamb and fried aubergine salad. The lamb cake starter was outstanding. The chocolate brownie with clotted cream was the best I've had. The place also offers some great beers. I love my ales, so was delighted with the Summer Lightening. Service was attentive and it was good value at less than £30 each inc service. We'll be back!

Hop & Spice is such a refreshing restaurant. The food is wonderful. I'd definitely recommend the tapas option - 6 curries between 2! (& don't miss the amazing aubergine salad). The flavours are fresh, varied and tasty. Service is on the right side of attentive, and it's good value. Beer list is a bonus (I have an addiction to Leffe Blonde!). Highly recommended, but it's best to book as it always seems busy.
