The Yellow House Bar and Kitchen in south London’s Surrey Quays near the shopping centre is a big, warm hug of a local bar and restaurant. The owner is on site and usually in the kitchen preparing one of three menus on offer: the restaurant menu, the grill menu and the pizza menu. The Yellow House had an earlier incarnation in Plough Way, but has moved to more intimate premises with a slick, post-Industrial vibe when it comes to décor, but still the same perfectionist’s attention to detail, relaxed ambience, warm welcome and passion about the food on the plate. Locals love this place. The Yellow House European cuisine offers dependable classics like grilled Scottish beef burger on ciabatta with hand-cut chips, thin-crust pizzas from the wood-fired pizza oven, and seared snapper with basil mash, minestrone and rouille. There’s a log-burning stove in the bar for wintry days and a great selection of wines and draught premium lagers.

What is 'following'?Unpromisingly located at a busy junction opposite Surrey Quays mall, but it's worth persevering. I think the owner is a baker by profession, and all the baked stuff is great, from the parmesan biscuits and the wood-fired pizzas to the brownies and sable biscuits that come with the home-made icecreams. The menus are a bit of a mess - one for the pizzas and grills, one for drinks, one for desserts and yet another for mains and starters. From this last you can order individually or two courses for £20, such as a very good duck spring roll with pak choy followed by hake with mussels, spinach and cream sauce and roast new pots. Interesting wine list, although only three by the glass (or 500ml pichet). Even if you can't face dessert, find room for the extraordinary fudge. Staff are sweet. It's a lovely neighbourhood restaurant, but also well worth a journey.
