Michael Winner (gourmand) is among the loyal customers of this Mayfair institution operating for nearly 180 years from the same site, though not with the same owners – Justin Preston and David House (both butchers by trade) saved the business from imminent closure when they bought it in spring 2006. Beef and game remain the fortes; in season you’ll find snipe, teal and widgeon as well as more common species such as pheasant and grouse, and for a small charge Allens will process birds you have acquired. Meat boxes are also available, including a gourmet weekend selection and a weekly meat box (available online) for two or four people.
