Bernard J Shapero

Mayfair

Bernard J Shapero’s interesting collection of antiquarian and out-of-print texts is enticingly displayed over four floors in these smart Mayfair premises. Specialisms here include travel (with a comprehensive collection of Baedeker guides), natural history, literature and colour-plate books. The shop’s newest department deals with books from and about Russia and there are also rare maps and atlases and monographs of early photography. The shop began in Grays Antiques Market in 1979 and moved to Notting Hill before settling here over a decade ago; the range, presentation and, above all, quality of its beautiful volumes are second to none. One for the serious collector – though by no means unapproachable to the rest of us.

Bernard J Shapero Rare Books is a wonderful book shop, specialising in fine printed works on Travel and Natural History, but with a great selection of other works such as English & Continental literature and history, including Russian. They also hold occasional special events with a focus on, for example, photography, economics, and even modern & contemporary art, such as the 2013 Winter Show organised by Vanessa Clewes Salmon Modern & Contemporary Art http://ow.ly/qJjrs
